If you read the comments on the pictures you added, you will realize that they used these aircraft around the Haj. They don't need that capicity during the rest of the year except for this time so why buy a plane, have it sitting all year doing nothing when you can lease one, paint a bit on it and than give it back.

They are ACMI leases, as the Garuda pilots are not trained on the 767 and A340, so the pilots and crew come along.

They are used for haj flights to Mecca.

What does Garuda do, send the planes out with the paint still wet? Look at the leading edges of the tails on the JMC and Britannia aircraft!!

Sometime in the mid-eighties, Garuda operated a code-share flight between JKT and AMS. Hence, one of the KLM B742s had the tail repainted with the Garuda bird, but the fuselage retained the KLM blue. It was a promotion of the code share similar to SIA/BA Concorde, CO/AZ DC10, NW/KLM DC10.

The Hajj is generally 6weeks of outbound flying,
2weeks break, then 6weeks flying of inbound.
You can see it doesnt pay to have an aircraft
repainted for such short usage.
GARUDA as flag carrier for the Republic of Indonesia,
which has the largest Muslim population outside of the
Arab world, has the responsibility for transporting
the HAJJ pilgrimages. In general GARUDA requires
the tail to be Whited-out and any airline titles to
be removed from their HAJJ aircraft, but as you can
see from the above pics, it doesnt always work that
way. The reason you have been seeing so many
different aircraft in the last few years is that WORLD
AIRWAYS in no longer offering HAJJ flights, and they
were the largest contracted carrier for GARUDA for
many, many years. It certainly makes for some
unique pictures when you end with things like
L-1011s, A340, or B767, which GARUDA has never
flown on their own. Other major suppliers of
aircraft over the years have included, TOWER AIR,
EVERGREEN. Some rare aircraft that have been
used for the HAJJ include Air America/TOTAL AIR
L1011 and a KEY AIR DC10-10 which actually
was operated on GARUDA'S network to Australia.
