Well, with AKL's one and only runway closed for repairs, aircraft are landing on the taxiway, euphemistically termed as the 'standby runway'. The taxiway has shifted to the main apron area.

When a widebody jet lands on the taxiway, no other widebody jet can be taxiing parallel on the apron area because the wings will slap into each other.

I arrived just in time to see a Korean 777 touch down on 05 and it had to hold at the other end for a MAS 747-400 (9M - MPP "Putrajaya", brand spanking new and glistening beautifully) touch down. Because, of course, if the KE had proceeded onto the main apron, the wings would have collided.

After a few tricky manouevres, everything was hunky dory. The KE rolled towards the terminal, hugged closely by the MAS behind it.

The KE pulled into 7, the MAS into 2.

A Cargolux 747-400, proceeding for takeoff, had to roll across the taxiway, onto the proper runway, used the proper runway to taxi right down to the end, then rolled back onto the taxiway for a good long take off.

Shortly after, CX107 touched down from Hong Kong, B-HXL, pulling into 10.

Shortly after that, the runway direction changed to 23, and a Garuda A330 (D) touched down.

NZ70, non-stop from Hong Kong, decided it wanted to visit Brisbane and was scheduled to arrive 1.5 hours late.

The arrivals area was a shambles. I think Auckland Airport need to take a good hard look at their current facilities - urgent expansion is needed!

ZK-NCH diverted to BNE due to enroute weather conditions to uplift fuel. (100% loading didn't help).

I no what you are saying I noticed this aswell but the aircraft are nice and close when arriving and departing 23R or 05L!
There is going to be a major increase in international traffic later this year with Lan Chile starting services and Thai, Malaysian, Qantas, Air NZ and I think Polar Air Cargo all increasing flights!

Malaysian isn't really increasing flights, it is just restoring them...And didn't they used to be daily with the 777s?? Virgin Blue look set to make an impact & SQ are likely to upgrade their frequency. In between some of the gates at AKL there is not much more than 5m clearance between wingtips..
Saturdays are a rather dull day for flights...

Yes MH was daily with 777's in 2000, 2001!

Remember in December and January this year SQ had extra flights that arrived in AKL at 0625 and departed at 0755 that gave an afternoon arrival and departure in Singapore, which I guess would give good connections to other points in Asia so if they want to increase flights I wonder if they will go for this schedule again as there are usually gates avaliable in the morning once a couple of NZ and QF flights depart to OZ. As for Virgin Blue I wonder how many flights they would have a day.

from what I hear it is likely SQ twice daily with 777s current 285/6 & late afternoon/evening flight.

I reckon VirginBlue once a day to SYD,MEL,BNE to start off with, then boost capacity to twice daily & start AKL-ADL. maybe 4x/5x a week

When would that take place do you think Rob next summer maybe?

I was sort of thinking the same with Virgin Blue myself.
I was also wondering if perhaps in the NZ summer atleast Korean would do double daily 772's. I think they are getting 2 more 772ER's this year.

CX also need to use a larger aircraft in the NZ summer!
I guess the 744 would be used or otherwise more 343's with addtional flights.

NBT, from what I hear it is when they get approval from HQ...that means as soon as they hear back about the last few month's loads, if they think that the loads are good enough to sustain a second flight.
