Ryanair today confirmed that if Ireland beat Germany, then they will give away for free all seats on its 13 routes to/from Frankfurt Hahn, Hamburg Lubeck and Friedrichshafen airports in Germany (on a day to be nominated by Ryanair over the next 3 months), all that German passengers will pay is the airport charges and Government taxes, but the net air fare will be €0.00. However Ryanair will only carry out this offer if Lufthansa equally agrees that it will carry all of its passengers travelling to/from Frankfurt Main Airport at a similar €0.00 fare in the "unlikely(???)" event of Germany beating Ireland.

 Big thumbs up

Therefore this amounts to no offer at all as there is no way LH will do that.

I thinks that's a pretty weak publicity stunt.

Much braver would be to offer free seats on Ryanair when Germany beats Ireland and free seats on Lufthansa when Ireland beats Germany.

Yuck, we have heard this before from Ryanair.
This just shows how RIDICULOUS Ryanair is at times.
Do they expect Lufthansa to give out it's seats (including First and business class) on it's whole network ???????
How dumb to you have to be to do that ?

LH is significantly larger, has many more fights and have more classes.
Also Germany is likely to win against Ireland so that's another point.
What a piece of bs again from Ryanair.

Well, what do you expect from a moron like O'leary?

a) Germany will blow Ireland away easily, so no risk for Ryanair.

b) Ryanair would lose maybe 200,000€ on that day, Lufthansa would lose many millions - Lufthansa has 2 or 3 times more flights per hour from Frankfurt than Ryanair has per DAY. And of course with bigger planes, business class etc.

Somehow I'm asking myself if you can't do anything against this continuing bullshit coming out of the freaking mouth of O'leary...

Again, some people fail to understand O'Leary's humour....oh well!

Of course it's a PUBLICITY STUNT, nothing else; MOL knows damn well LH would never reciprocate...again, he is being very smart, and taking the initiative...  Big thumbs up

Long live Ryanair!

Out of interest, what makes you think thet Germany will 'blow Ireland away' when better teams than Germany like Portugal and Holland were unable to in the qualifyers?

Question is, wether this stunt results in bad publicity or in good one. FR has lead quite a couple of PR campaigns, where people became positively aware of the airline because they could see some real benefits for themselves.
In my personal opinion however, this particular PR gag is total nonsense, because due to the restricitons imposed ("we'll do it, but only if LH will do it, too"), there is no real gain for the adressee (sp?), i.e. the passenger/ customer of FR.

"Addressee" I guess, although we call it "Customer" or "the public".

The public reaction to this "campaign" will be interesting, obviously I don't listen to people on Airliners.Net, as they are hardly representative of the average traveller.

You may be right, and German consumers might think it nonsense...but in Britain we have a saying 'any publicity is good publicity'. Thus, even if many people think Ryanair are playing a fast one (which they are, bar a miracle), at least the brand gets stuck in people's minds...that is the sole aim of MOL and his team-to try and make Ryanair like a common brand, such as 'Nescafe', something they will think of, when thinking about travelling.

It may not work, but so far, the "Ryanair project" has been very successful, whatever people on the internet may say...at least they are trying, and for that, who can blame them.

There is greater choice; that's a fantastic thing. If you don't like Ryanair, that's fine, don't fly them; but don't blame their presence in your market...you should be pleased if it forces Lufthansa to offer more reasonable fares!

I have no problem with Ryanair in general, but with the way they act in the public.

"what makes you think thet Germany will 'blow Ireland away' when better teams than Germany like Portugal and Holland were unable to in the qualifyers?"

Well, at least we were to qualify us for the World Cup, Holland wasn't  Big grin
German Teams always play much better in Tournaments than they do in "unimportant" games. And of course, O'leary wouldn't offer this bet if Ireland could win  Smile

Just one more thing.
If lufthansa would agrre to do this withRyanair and if Ireland would win there are 2 choices for the traveller. After LH and Fr have set a date people can book a free ticket.

The most likely scenario would be... I'll have to travel from Frankfurt to Dublin and live in Frankfurt.

a) I take the train to Hahn, fly to Dublin and continue my journey on train and/or subway to the center of Dublin

b) I go to Frankfurt Main, fly to Dublin while I have my breakfast and a nice cup of coffee and than take a ride to Dublin center.

What would you choose?

Exactely, Lufthansa's aircraft will fly fully booked, while Ryanair aircraft stay grounded due to lack of FREE passengers.

Well, stupid as ever, this PR stunt. Think about this:

Ryanair serves Pescara, Pisa, Bergamo, Montpellier, Stansted, Torp, Bournemouth, Prestwick, Shannon from Hahn. Of those destinations, only Pisa, Bergamo and Stansted offer a day return.

That means that if I can get a "free" ticket to any other destination, I will have to purchase a ticket for my return flight anyway - other than on Lufthansa to almost all European destinations with no guarantee that any reasonably priced tickets will be available the week before or after the day Ryanair chooses.
Great deal :-(

Manni,

You miss the point. It won't happen. (Bar a miracle...) Ryanair knows it won't happen....it's just free publicity with minimum liability.

It's very clever.

Ryanair fly to DUB by the way.

Capt. Picard,

In the unlikely event that LH would agree and Germany would be beaten by Ireland.

I know that DUB is about, if not the only airport they are flying to where the established carriers also fly to as main airport for the concerning city. Did I give the impression that they would fly to a secondary airport somewhere near Dublin? Oops!

From their website:
It is in German so for you who don't understand it it just says what has been said already in above posts about the Ryanair soccer-deal with LH...

I wonder if the Germans are going to like this "ad" at their website...I mean, I don't think saying that national team s&$ks (basically) will be good promotion for FR...They should have thought twice about this, I think.
