Hi!

I was wondering whether Tokyo Haneda-Sapporo Chitose was the busiest route of the world...

With 36 daily flights (peak season) all operated by widebody Aircraft. The smallest aircraft is the Boeing 767-300 that are operated by all the airlines operating between the 2 cities.

JAL operates mainly this route (13 flights)with Boeing 747-400D and 200SR, Boeing 777-300 and -200, and for the morning flight and evening flight 767-300.
(first flight is scheduled at 5.30AM from Tokyo... )

ANA operates 13 daily flight Boeing 747-400D, 777-300(one flight), and 767-200.

JAS operates this route with A300 B2/B4, A300-600, and B777-200
(8 time a day)
And the last one is Air Hokkaido International (Air DO) who operates 6 time a day B767-300.

Quite impressive isn't it?

Regards,
Theo

There are many city pairs that are as busy (if not busier) - London to Paris,
Tokyo - Osaka, Hong Kong - Taipei etc, Washington - New York, LA to SFO.

The busiest in Europe is BCN-MAD, also called "El puente" ("the bridge"). Although, Tokyo-Sapporo seems a bit busier Smile/happy/getting dizzy.

Actually, London Paris is not anymore a very busy route. Competition from the Eurostar (Channel Tunnel) hurt it a lot.

Well, actually depends on how you are going to calculate this. Most pax travel a day between HND-CTS with long-haul planes like 744 on short flights but I'm sure that there are other destinations where more smaller (or even bigger) planes fly between each city.

I think Air Do shut down its operations and they went bankrupt or are they still operating?

Amsterdam-London warrants over 50 flights a day (at least 4 airlines flying to 5 airports in London), over half of them 737 class aircraft.
Probably among the highest flight frequencies, but as most are not widebodies probably not the largest number of passengers.

Busiest city pair in terms of passengers: TYO-CTS
Busiest airport pair in terms of passengers: HND-CTS
Busiest city pair in terms of flights: Rio-SaoPaulo
Busiest airport pair in terms of flights: MAD-BCN

The really busy routes for city pairs that are that are a bit too far for car travel and there is not competition from trains.

Because Sappaoro is on a seperate island the otherwise excellent train services are at a disadavantage. But is Sappora a big city?

I would have thought that the busiest route is New York-Boston - train service is very slow.

The Madrid-Barcelona service also has the advantage that the alternative train service is very slow!

Rio and Sao Paolo are huge cities - and I suspect the train service is not terribly good.

London Paris use to v. busy but the train service competes

A couple of comments:

1. I believe there is still considerable LHR-CDG traffic, but that is mostly transfers from long-distance international flights arriving at LHR. It's still too much time taken to get ground transport from LHR to the Waterloo International Station in London, the current terminus for Eurostar. If you're living in the London area, though, Eurostar has become pretty much the main choice for convenient travel to Paris.

2. The HND-CTS airline service may become less important in the future. This is because Japan Railways has finally begun work on extending the Tohoku line Shinkansen trains from Morioka north through the Seikan Tunnel to Sapporo. Once that happens (probably before 2010), the number of on the Tohoku line Shinkansen will really zoom up to very high levels. It should be noted that the Seikan Tunnel was designed to eventually accommodate Shinkansen trainsets when the Tohoku line is extended to Aomori.

Not really busy is FRA-TXL but LH offers on weekdays up to 19 flight daily, the route is mostly operated by widebodies (AB6 and 310).

When has there ever been 5 airports in London????????  Laugh out loud Luton is in Luton 20 odd miles from the M25 and 40 odd miles from central London. Stanstead is the same as is Gatwick. the only London airports are Heathrow and London City. This could start in to a Hahn type argument couldnt it.

Ill stop now

So....I count....53 a day.....and every flight is usually very crowded to say the least.....

I know the MEL - SYD is very busy as well......almost half hourly with a 767 or 747 too

Well, MAD-BCN has over 70 flights on some days. And HND-CTS gets 10000 pax per day.

But I can very well imagine London-DUB is the busiest international CITY pair.

I would say the following routes would have to be among the busiest in the world:
HND-CTS - Isn't this the busiest in the world in passenger volume?
HKG-TPE
SIN-KUL
MEL-SYD
LHR-CDG
LHR-JFK
LHR-DUB
LHR-FRA
LAX-SFO
LGA-ORD
LAX-ORD

Probably a few more.

I would have suggested LHR-JFK too, with AA, UA, BA and VS all serving the route, BA alone with 6 subsonic and 1 supersonic each day, soon to be incread to 7 sub, and possibly [once the economy picks up again] a second supersonic.
That has to be a busy route, served with jumbos and 777s

Well, lets have everyone do some homework.

Lets determine ASMs and RPMs.

Look at a route from ONE airport to the OTHER (none of this london - gatwick/heathrow/stansted/luton/city combined as one). Find out what the configuration is for each flight. Then find out the flight miles or KM. Multiply seats by the # of flights on EACH day of the week, multiply by lets say 4.

then find out how many passengers are on that route (may be easy, may be difficult) and then multiply that by the # of miles or KM. That gives you Revenue Passenger Miles :P

you may have 50 flights a day from A to B in a 737, but if you have 20 in a 744, you have more people on those 20 flights :P

It's easy for all of us to cut and paste flights and city pairs into this browser....after all I just did it. It's great to say this is the busiest market in the world but in all honest who really cares???? Does the person sitting in 13D on EI 152 know that? Doubt it. Do you think that the person sitting in 24A on AA 105 know that the only US airlines that have landing rights at LHR are UA and AA? Doubt it. It's not hugely important.

But if you work for an airline and are fortunate enough to oeprate in an area where there is huge demand for a shuttle route you do need to know these things. Qantas operates huge aircraft on the half hour between Melbourne and Sydney. Aer Lingus operate a 321 and 737 on the LHR - DUB route. AA operate 777 aircraft on JFK - LHR (with the odd 767). Essentially what you are dealing with here is totally theoretical. I don't know the load numbers on the QF routes. All we can go by here is to say QF have x number of seats available on this route, EI on this route and AA on this route. You add up the seats and then say ah yes this is the busiest route in the world. Yeah that's fine but is it? Planes fly empty. Is QF transporting upwards of 400 people an hour from MEL to SYD every day of the week? God knows. It's all a possibility and something no one can really lay claim to....all we can do is speculate.

...MAD-BCN was the busiest airport-pair in terms of number of flights. Oag.com shows 41 flights MAD to BCN on 8 Aug. Surely somebody can beat that-- SDU-CGH? HNL-OGG?

PDX-SEA is also fairly busy for a US domestic route. I'm just qoinq to quess since I don't really have time to look it up, but I would estimate about 25-30 fliqhts a day between the two cities.

RayC, there are no plans - or funds - to extend the Shinkansen to Hokkaido. The current limit is to Hachinohe in Aomori which should open this summer.

I would think the New York-London. It was the first route in the modern day jet aviation.

Busiest routes (most passengers) as determined by IATA in 2001:

Intra-Europe: Dublin-London (trend increasing), closely followed by Paris-London (decreasing)

Intra-Asia/Pacific: Hong Kong-Taipei, far ahead of Kuala Lumpur-Singapore

Intra-USA: New York-Fort Lauderdale, followed by New York-Orlando

Europe-North America: London-New York, by a long way

Europe-Asia: London-Hong Kong, now ahead of London-Tokyo

O&D traffic means nothing, as upwards of 50% of AMS traffic is connecting. These stats dont really tell us anything.

A year ago, prior to 9-11, I counted all the flights between SFO, SJC, and OAK to LAX, SNA, BUR, and ONT (there were no flights to LGB at the time), and it added up to 200 flights a day. It was nearly fifty more flights a day than any other corridor in the USA, and I believe in the world. I tried to find the numbers in Japan, but it was more difficult.

Anyway, the numbers between Bay Area and Southern California get under reported because statistically, each airport is considered a different city. There report flights between SJC-SNA as being San Jose-Orange County. I believe if you add up all the passengers on those routes it will the busiest corridor travelled in the world, or close. It is a lot, especially considering most of the traffic is strictly people flying between those destinations. A small percentage of the passengers flying to LAX are connecting to International flights, but the rest are flying between San Francisco and LA.

PS. I haven't counted since 9-11, but it has dropped a whole lot.

... for non-US stats, but fortunately in the US we have

http://www.ostpxweb.dot.gov/aviation/aptcomp/aptcomp2001.htm

which gives the O&D totals for each US airport pair in 2001. Miller22's figures must be older? since in 2001 JFK/EWR/LGA to LAX added up to 2,690,930, which put them behind JFK/EWR/LGA to MCO, which had 2,701,630. Somehow New York to FLL got left out (3,218,730). The notion that NY-FLL is the busiest US domestic route originated in DOT's curious method of grouping airports; most people who total the figures for themselves will agree that (Los Angeles area) to (San Francisco area) is still the busiest in the country. Unless you mean busiest airport-pair, which as usual is HNL-OGG.

In Miller22's table, what happened to Tokyo-Sapporo and Tokyo-everywhere else? How about Rio-Sao Paulo, and Taipei-Kaohsiung, and maybe Sydney-Melbourne?

ok guys, this is my first posting on this site I hope I do it right  Smile
as far as the busiest route in pax numbers i don't know.....but in flight numbers between two cities i would say sao paulo-rio is very busy. see bellow
acording to the site digirotas.com.br(all portuguese) that is updated every 15 days.

sao paulo airports are CGH and GRU
rio airports are SDU and GIG

the most common route is CGH-SDU with 95 flights a day. flights are flown with b-733,735,737,a-319,erj-145 a curious fact is that the airlines serve a full meal on this 50 min flight.

the route GRU-GIG is flown mostly by the big boys from varig, that arrive from the int'l flights with a stop in GRU continuing onto GIG. flights are flown with b-733,738,762,763,m-11,f-100,777 and a-300 on a total of 22 a day.

the route CGH-GIG has only 12 flights a day and its flown with 737 and f-100

it comes to a total of 129 flights between sao paulo and rio on the weekdays.

thats all folks

The way that DOT groups up airports is odd. While they group up the multiple airports of San Francisco, New York City, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Houston, and Dallas, they do not group up the multiple airports of Los Angeles and Miami. The busiest US domestic routes, in no order, are most likely:

Honolulu-Maui
Los Angeles-San Francisco
Miami-New York City
Chicago-New York City
Boston-New York City
Washington, D.C.-New York City
Los Angeles-New York City
San Francisco-New York City
Dallas-Houston
Chicago-Los Angeles

I will go out on a limb and say that those are most likely all in the top ten of top fifteen. The busiest US-Europe route is, as everyone knows, New York City-London. Busisest to Asia is Honlulu-Tokyo, busiest to Canada I believe is Chicago-Toronto, busiest to Caribbean is Miami-Nassau, and busiest to South America is traditionally Miami-Caracas, but I think Miami-Sao Paulo (2 daily A330s, 2 daily 777s, daily 763, daily M11, always full) now takes that honour. The busiest regional route, counting only passengers flying on planes with 50 or less seats, is Miami-Orlando, followed by Miami-Tampa ( both those numbers do not take into account passengers flying FL, AA, WN, DL, and UA on those routes, only USAirways Express, Continental Connection, American Eagle, and Delta Connection). Some other notable and very busy domestic corridors include Seattle-Anchorage, Los Angeles-Las Vegas, New York City-San Juan, Miami-San Juan, Los Angeles-Phoenix, New York City-Atlanta, Washington, D.C.-Atlanta, Miami-Chicago, Miami-Atlanta, Orlando-Atlanta, Orlando-New York City. Busy and dense international corridors include New York City-Paris, San Francisco-Tokyo, Los Angeles-Tokyo, Miami-Santo Domingo, Miami-Port-au-Prince, Detroit-Amsterdam, Miami-Madrid, New York City-Santo Domingo, Los Angeles-Mexico City, Miami-San Jose, and New York City-Frankfurt, a lot of London routes, and alot of routes I did not mention, I was just giving some random examples.

When I used to fly to Taiwan a lot in the nineties, I read in a magazine there that the Taipei-Kaohsiung route had the world's greatest number of flights per day, which was about 70 at the time (around 1995).

ORD-LGA is pretty busy... over 60 flights a day. United flies every hour to LGA. I believe American does the same thing.
