Do not know what they used, but I was working at A&M when the library was dedicated. Air Force One did a trial landing to see how it would work. Awesome sight however they ended up at Ellington field. Also, they brought in 2 C-5A's. Never thought those planes would fit as well. Hopefully they did bring in a 744 though, I will see what I can find out.

JHooper...IT WAS AWESOME!!! It went just fine, takeoff and landing. They just decided on going into Ellington for security reasons from what I heard. The C 5's were a site to see as well, especially on takeoff...Just FYI DC-10's used to fly in pretty regular during football season as charters.

So, George W Bush uses Ellington Field normally when he goes to his ranch, then? I'm guessing the President of China's plane will use whatever Air Force 1 uses.

Well I do not know which one they use for the ranch. Perhaps San Antonio or Austin somewhere..At the time, Clinton was President so I am thinking he did not want to land in College Station with all the Aggie Republicans  ~!

He flew into Ellington Field in Houston on a 744 I believe.

I haven't seen it in a long time, but I remember several years ago, there were times when I was on West Campus that Heavies would practice TO/L often. Heard they were training out of TSTC in Waco. Not sure though. But it was fun to watch the DC-10's line up at Easterwood and then power out of there.

AF 1 at CLL made a full stop. The tail was like a shark going down the runway as it was easy to see from West campus. I stood outside the library lots for my job and watched planes all the time. And James you are right, I forgot about TSTC.

Jhooper, just remember who we're talking about. CLL's administration aren't the brightest bulbs on the A&M payroll.

I know when then Pres. George Bush came here in either 1988 or 1989 to speak @ graduation, he flew in on the VC-137. I even have a picture of it hanging in my room. First aviation picture I ever took. You can see the current terminal in the background still under construction. They also had a C-5 here for that, bringing in all the security personal and I believe the Presidential Limo. As for when the Presidential Library was opened, I don't think Clinton's VC-25 came here. It would have been on the news that day but I never saw it mentioned.

Col. Happ said that the only large aircraft that CLL couldn't handle would be a fully loaded C-141B Starlifter. It doesn't spread its weight out enough and would probably damage the runway. A C-5, 747, 777, and even the AN-124 could land here because they have better weight distribution.

I have no clue! I agree with B757, that the admin. may just be out on a cloud. Who knows..I am not big into military aircraft, but it seems that a C5 is bigger than a 777 or does it just appear that way??

And B757..CLinton came via Helicopter from Elington, but did have the C5 carrying the limo and other gear.

Yea, the C-5 is definitely bigger than the 777. Oh, by the way, an American Airlines 757 is on it's way into CLL right now!

I think that Bush used Lackland AFB when he goes to the Ranch. I saw him land there in June.

Maiznblu_757, Lackland AFB is in San Antonio. If bush was going to his ranch, near Waco, then he wouldn't be flying into Lackland. Possibly Lackland was one of his campaign stops to raise millions from suckers.

In June, it said on the local news in SAT that he was going to his ranch... Thats all I know.

Well, it's 190 miles from San Antonio to Crawford and 24 miles from Waco to Crawford. Maybe he left AF1 here and boarded another aircraft to go to Waco? Certainly he didn't take "Automobile Force One". Even Austin is closer... 120 miles from Crawford.

Yes, he was at Lackland in June, I saw him fly over as I was driving by. The next day the C17 departed. They had something about it on the San Antonio news.
I know what I saw.

He very well may have been in San Antonio for one reason or another, but I doubt he flew into there for the purpose of visiting his Crawford Ranch.
