That is some great information, thanks. Emirates is my favorite airline next to of course Singapore Airlines.

Quick question I know flights to JFK will probaly be non-stop from Dubai but will DXB-SFO be non-stop, if not will it stop in London or Osaka or any other city?

SFO will be served non-stop using A340-500s.

A380jet
Emirates has expressed an interest in serving CEB however this is all subject to the Phillipine authorities actually honouring their committment and sitting down with EK to discuss the increased access rights. The authorities have backed away twice and the next set of talks are scheduled for 1Q in 2003. If they go ahead then Emirates have said they want to take MNL upto a double-daily and also serve CEB.

MEA
SYD will go daily on 30 March 2003.
Emirates are currently requesting the Australian authorities for 2nd dailies into both SYD and MEL. These would be dedicated nonstops using A340s. They also plan to take up PER upto a daily next year, subject to acft availability.

Excellent, I'm flying into Lebanon in the beginning of May so I hope these flights are up & running by then.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to get seats on Emirates out of Australia. Travel agents I spoke to wont even allow you to fly to Perth for connecting flights or even into Asia to connect with EK.

They are flying already to AMS, but only with the Freighter.

Maybe they will come with passenger flights from summer 2003/4.

Emirates777,

Any idea as to when, if at all, service to IAH would begin and what type of aircraft they would use on the route? Thanks.

No plans to increase their services into KUL? How are they doing on the KUL route? Any good? How about a daily nonstop service instead of only a 3 times weekly nonstop service?

IAH-EWR,
I think IAH is planned for late 2004/2005 and would be served nonstop using A340-500s. Furthermore, as the A340-600s arrive in 2005 this will free up more A340-500s to do routes like IAH and South America.

Andie007,
DUS service is going ok - some strength occassionally but generally quite stable. The real money here is in the cargo.

Odie,
Nothing in the system at the moment but i think additional Asia expansion will be governed by delvy of more 777s. It looks like the 2 773s that were optioned for 2003 are not going to be exercised at this point. The KUL route overall has done very well this year. If they do expand KUL, likely they add a frequency but all contingent upon demand.

This is great news for SFO customers will be enjoy for flight to Dubai, U.A.E there, too. If the passengers will be like to flying nonstop to San Francisco, CA and will have a very nice tourists.

Emirates777, Thanks for the information about with the new route out there. I'm never use it hear for the before. So far that might will be connecting for trip into Hawaii and west coast flight. How much miles for the nonstop from DXB-SFO there, please? well, catch ya later!!

Is ORD being planned any time soon? I'm kind of disappointed that EK didn't pick ORD as part of it's North American launch.  Sad

Dubai to San Francisco! My god that's a long flight. Anyone know the address of that site that plots shortest routes and mileage? I guess you'd fly out of Dubai and head north, way up over northern Europe and the Arctic then back down over NW Canada and over Seattle into SFO. What do you reckon, 16 hours westbound? Easy.

What cities is EK looking at in South America? What are the chances of EK starting a route to Caracas? I know the economy in Venezuela is abysmal, but it's still a major oil producer.

I'd give my real opinion of this news, but it would involve a number of unpleasant expletives! So, another year and they've missed out Dublin. Right, that's it. If they don't want it, we'll get someone who will - SIA, MAS, Thai. If we have to use diplomatic arm twisting we will, but I'm damned if I'm going to waste more time on EK.

Sorry, Emirates777, I don't mean to offend you as the bearer of bad news, but frankly, I'm fed up of waiting year after year and we'll find someone else to do the job. Of course, much of the criticism must go towards the Irish authorities for an uncoordinated approach. I'll be meeting the Irish Minister for Transport to discuss the issue of access to Asia pretty soon and I will be raising this issue prominently.

Time for us to stop wasting time. It's sad that EK missed its chance; with Ireland being one of Europe's fastest growing economies, with a third of the Australian population being of Irish descent, they could have made it work. I'm sure they'll be very happy in Moscow and Lagos. Good luck to them.

I know it would be a long way off, but if SFO/JFK go well, and then LAX/ORD, and then IAD/IAH, anyone think MIA and BOS have a shot at Emirates? Maybe 2-3x weekly to each. I think it could work very well. And DTW may work out too. I hope Emirates becomes a succsesful carrier on the trans-Atlantic market to the point where they can grow to become one of the major forces across the Atlantic like Air France, British Airways, and Lufthansa.

NY makes sense, I guess Malaysia do it (albeit only with a 777 and it includes pax from KL as well) but San Francisco seems a little optimistic. As for Miami and Boston, is there REALLY enough traffic for these routes? It doesn't seem to be a good time to launch new US-Arab flights, and even in the good times, Boston? Miami? Can't see it myself.

At risk of being a self-aggrandising arsehole, I'm very impressed with my prediction of the route the DXB-SFO flight would take (north of Europe, NW Canada, Seattle etc). Thanks to whoever posted the map. But any ideas how long the flight would take?

Not right now, but in 2005/2006, I think Miami and Boston are very plausable. Remember, Emirates isn't launching these flights to fly people between the US and Dubai. They are launching them to connect to thier Dubai megahub. There is quite some heavy traffic between Miami and the Middle East/North Africa, and, while I cannot speak for Boston, it would not surprise me if the case was the same. If Emirates grow to thier full potential in the United States, I could imagine a network that by 2010 may include:

JFK, EWR, BOS, ORD, LAX, SFO, IAH, IAD, MIA, DTW

That is ofcourse assuming American consumers welcome Emirates with wide open arms as a premier trans-Atlantic carrier the way they love Lufthansa, Air France, and British Airways.

Cedarjet.

If you go to this site:
http://gc.kls2.com/
You can make your own maps like the one above - enter a crusie speed and it'll give you a rough flying time.

Malaysia schedule DXB-EWR with a block time of 14:55 and EWR-DXB with a block time of 12:40. If you knock 30 min off those block times, that would give flying times of 14:25 and 12:10.

Using speeds that correspond to those times on the EWR-DXB route would give the following flight times:
DXB-SFO 16:45
SFO-DXB 14:20

I'm surprised DTW hasn't been added yet. There has been talk for a couple years now that Emirates would fly here.

Detroit has the largest Arab population outside the Mideast and would be a very popular spot being that DTW is only served once a week with a Royal Jordanian A310 and Northwest/KLM connections at AMS to various mideast locations

Many times i have said that the Arab population in the DTW area is NOT from the gulf region.......it is from the Sham(Syria,Lebonan,Jordan) region + Egypt. That region is way far west of DXB and flying from DTW to DXB and then flying west again to Beirut or Amman would make very little sense geographically. It would be far more convinient for the pax to just take a European airlines or RJ......so to say that EK should fly to DTW just because it has a large "arab" population is naive...EK comes from a different Arab region then those people. Following is a map which may explain to some of you what i am talking about. It shows what routes to Cairo,Beirut and Dubai would look like from DTW.....DXB is eastern most route on this map.

I wonder if Emirates would consider AKL as a feasible destination, as there is quite a lot of traffic from NZ to the Middle East.... and Emirates could route via BKK or KUL which is at current sorely lacking in competition.

SFO makes great sense for EK to catch India bound traffic. There are a very large number of Indians in the Bay Area. EK could really capitalize on capturing this traffic and carrying them to the Indian subcontinent, of which they serve several destinations.
