Gulf Air is likely to join either Star Alliance or One World within three to four months, the airline's top official confirmed. The airline is also speading its wings to new destinations in Australia, South Africa and Greece.

"Gulf Air is in discussions with both Star Alliance and One World, but since it is a key decision which can be made just once we will make a final decision in the next three to four months," said James Hogan, president and chief executive of Gulf Air.

Hogan said the airline is looking at new routes to fly and the new destinations would be Sydney, Johannesburg and Athens. "The route profitability should make a contribution and not just to put our flag in a destination."

As a strong carrier in the Middle East, he said, the airline is looking at all market segments - regional and long haul and for the first time the airline has introduced a three-year network plan, short-haul and long-haul to consolidate its position and improve frequencies in key Middle East cities.

Hogan confirmed that the first instalment of the 90 million dinar injection by the three owner states has been made and the funds will be used for the various initiatives being planned.

Gulf Air is also in discussion with Oman Air to form a strategic alliance and work is underway to set up Gulf Air's single centralised reservations system through a call centre in Muscat in the next six months.

Moreover, the owners unanimously approved the airline's three-year recovery plans of the board last month which includes an injection of more than $238 million by the three owners.

Asked if any more aircraft would be leased from the Abu Dhabi-based Oasis International Leasing Co (Al Waha), he said it depends on the market and what is on offer. Currently, Gulf Air has three aircraft leased from Al Waha.

Hogan also clarified that there will be no new equity partner to take the place of Qatar which pulled out of Gulf Air last year. The legalities of Qatar's exit are being worked out at the government level. "It is an issue of the governments involved," he said.

Great news for GF!!!

I sincerely hope that they join an alliance soon as they need more of a global awareness. I dont know which one they will choose though...
I have a suspicion that it might be Oneworld as they codeshare with QF on domestic routes between Melbourne and Sydney as well as International routes from Sydney to Singapore.

There really needs to be a Middle Easters presence in Qantas' FFP.

Having said that, they also codeshare with Lufthansa and British Midland too, so maybe the Golden Falcon will spread her wings and move over to Star.
They already operate alot of routes to Asia which will easily compliment other star carriers services, particularly SQ and TG.

Who knows?????

Good for GF, its about time.

Cheers,

GulfAir

They said a few weeks ago that they'd narrowed the options to Star & Oneworld.

While Gulf Air joining OneWorld would be great for the both, I pray and hope that Emirates will beat Gulf Air and join Oneworld before them. I feel Emirates can offer more to Oneworld than Gulf Air can. Just my 2 cents worth....  Smile

How is Gulf Air doing at the moment?
I have heard of big troubles in the mutlinational airlines caused by the usual problems that affect each airline and the strong competition of Emirates and Qatar Airways.
Isn't it now backed by just two government of the area, Abu Dhabi and Bahrein, Dubai and Qatar having their own national airlines?
Last but not least, who can give me the composition of their fleet?

Thanks

Stefano

Those three new destination annonced - havn´t they all been served earlier by Gulf Air? These additions merely regain lost territory, but of course very positive news for GF and gulf aviation.

I hope that Qatar or Emirates join Star before the other and they will really help the Star network. But having that said, was not too long ago that EK and QR said they have no plans to join any alliance in the near future?

well, i believe GF is owned not only by Abu Dhabi and Bahrain, but also by Oman.
the fleet comprises of 9 767-300s, a couple of A330-200 and A340-300 and some A320s.

i´m wondering how many airlines Star can take up, it seems to be way too much. thus, i hope it´s either GF or QR who will join Star and not such a big fish as EK.
QR stated some time ago that they´d like to join star but its cooperation with LH seemed to have cooled off a bit...

personally, i´d hope for QR, they seem to be more financially healthy than GF?

cheers
daniel

I think GF will gain more from entering Skyteam because that alliance is weak in the Gulf, South Asia and Asia Pacific region and will pour in a plenty of passengers. But out of Star and Oneworld they have better cooperation with Oneworld carriers already and joining the alliance will cement their relationship even further.

Johnnybgoode,

"cooperation with LH seemed to have cooled off a bit..."

Not really, the relationship is better than ever. The issues of the audit of QR have been resolved or at least close to being resolved and it only affected the codeshares between MUC and DOH which should be resumed soon according the CEO including FRA. LH still cooperates with QR on cargo, FFP, Interlines, technical issues and codeshares on the other end of MUC and LH advisers seem to always be in QR's HQ when I visit. I can send you an email on QR, Star and LH if you want.

QatarAirways,

i appreciate that you want to send me an email on QR and LH. thanks anyway. well, i´ve been closely following most of QR news (especially on this board) so i should be quite up-to-date for an QR-outsider.

thus, what you stated is nothing new to me and i do hope that they will increase cooperation, but there must be a reason why they have suspended codeshare on the most important link between both airlines. i´m not suggesting it is something of grave nature...

cheers
daniel

The reason is the findings of the audit of 1998 which saw two major shortcoming on QR's side.

1- Some Airport/Ground Service Management Personnel
2- A Certain service which QR outsources to EK which LH requires them to do themselves.

The first problem has been rectified I don't if the work on the other has been completed. The problems only relate to the codeshare on MUC-DOH and are not obstacles on the LH-QR relationship which is flourishing.

My gues is that GF will join OneWorld as it already has a extensive codeshare agreement with AA.

I think it could swing either way.

BA already seem fairly close to Emirates, and they codeshare on flights to AUH.

However, AA also codeshare with Gulf Air.

I would prefer to see Emirates join OneWorld as they have more to offer than Gulf Air but any new member for OneWorld is better than none.
