As reported by today's Miami Herald, the launch date for LanEcuador has been set. LanEcuador will start daily service from Miami and JFK to Quito, continuing on to Guayquil, starting 1 March 2003. Service will operate with 767-300ERs. In addition, LanChile has announced LaDominicana, a new airline owned 49% by LanChile and 51% by local Dominican investors. The airline will start off by flying between Miami and Santo Domingo, and later expanding to other Dominican cities from Miami, and eventually New York City.

LanChile must do a market research, becaues LaDominicana will face great competitionbe on the SDQ-MIA route, since American Airlines, AeroMar and AeroContinenta have a great number of seats available and prices are quite low: $250 USD round trip. Do you know what kind of equipment will they be using? I was in Santo Domingo two weeks ago and in the gate next to my flights, an AeroMar B757 departed to Miami with very few passengers.

eventually LAN will drop the name of the country after the LAN .. so it will be just LAN.. its stands for LATIN AMERICAN NETWORKS... thats why if you take a look at the IFE they have only a LAN logo.. no country..

Lan is Lineas Aereas Nacionales
Lan Chile = Chile Airways
Lan Peru = Peru Airways
for Lan Dominicana is it possible but they are a lot of competence:
Current...
Aero Continente Dominicana 3 flights a week to MIA
AEROMAR Lineas Aereas Dominicanas 4 flights a week to MIA
American Airlines 4 daily flights
Planned(projects)
Air Santo Domingo wants 1 daily in SDQ-MIA (B727)
Lan Dominicana wants to Miami from SDQ
Pan American Airways SDQ-MIA (later phase)
Queen Air Service will start flights again soon (early bankrupted)
MEXICANA want and is saved 3 gates (new terminal in construction at SDQ) HUB in SDQ for start first flights to Europe and also regular flights
Dominicana Airlines wants start flights when is privatized by Lufthansa or Thomas Cook
Not only on Miami route also on San Juan PR and New York JFK.

It kinda sucks that LAN Chile will simply be LAN, I think that LAN Chile gives it a better sense of being THE Chilean airline, but whatever floats their boat. About the money, Latin America has alot of potential, Chile being the economy that it is has seen alot of growth in the past few years.

Good luck to LanChile on a Dominican venture- a couple of things are working against Lan in the formation of LaDominicana
A great deal of competition
LAN is hardly known in the Dominican Republic (their Punta Cana route caters to tourists)
On the other hand if they have good advertising and they provide good service they could do well (I have heard Aeromar's service is horrible and they are still around)

I find it very hard to believe that all the LAN airlines will merge under one. The reason that the IFE systems say LAN is very likely because LANChile, LanPeru, and now LanEcuador, all use the same aircraft. By having LanChile, LanPeru, etc., the Lan Group is much more able to cater to local markets and customers. LanDominicana is next, but I hear they also want LanArgentina and LanVenezuela (I see no need for a LanArg, but LanVenezuela would be very much welcomed!).

CaboVerde:
On my recent trip to the Dominican Republic, a friend of mine who lives in Santo Domingo told me that AeroMar service is not that good. She flew on AeroMar to Miami once for work purposes and she told me that the service is quite bad. She works for Banco del Progreso and they use American Airlines for most of their flights to the US, only if AA doesn't have availability, they use AeroMar, but they try to avoid it.
After talking with many dominicans, I came to the conclusion that most of them fly international airlines that don't use the name of the country as their official name because they don't trust Dominican products. What do you think??? Did I get it correct??? This means that wealthy Dominicans that pay the higher fares fly American Airlines, Continental, US Airways, Iberia, COPA, etc. and connect through their hubs. How can you make a profit if the lowest fare between SDQ and MIA is AeroContinente with a $200USD + TAX for a roundtrip.
Since I went in December, all flights were packed because there is a law in the Dominican Republic that only in the holiday season, the Dominicans can bring products from other countries up to $1,000USD, the rest of the year you can only bring $100 in products. Some girls in the Dominican Republic that came in my flight were complaining about Mexicana, American and AeroMar, because last time one of them was charged $500USD by Mexicana for excess baggage and COPA charges $75USD per additional bag no matter the size.
One final question, were did you heard that Mexicana will own three gates on the new terminal and will start a hub??? Mexicana no longer flies to the Dominican Republic, AeroCaribe took the CUN-SDQ flight and from what I heard, SDQ is not an option, since they don't have a transit zone in order to make easy connections.

I have read on the quality dominican newspaper Listin Diario at http://www.listindiario.com.do
in November 2002
Mexicana is moved from SDQ-MIA route not for passengers, but they were not cleared to fly this route, they have invest some US$ Millons in the new terminal of SDQ, so they owned 3 gates to get a HUB in SDQ to fly to Europe.
if you contact me i cand sent you the article my e-mail is egarcia1@chello.nl

AEROMAR Lineas Aereas Dominicanas have just bought a B737 from USair metrojet to fly in the caribbean.
The service of Aeromar i have heard a lot of people thast teh service is bad, not the food, but the attendants are some real dominicans, but the most are from Air Atlanta Icelandic attandants thats cant speak an word spanish and flys AEROMAR "LINEAS AEREAS DOMINICANAS", but i have also heard thats Aeromar have a good service. So they are 50/50
I give AEROMAR a big compliment:
Started flights after 11 September 2001
Still flying with FAA Category 2 (Dominican Rep is a Cat2 Country)
Served 100,000 passengers sinds the first operations (after Sept 11th 2001)
If the Cat 1 comes to DR then will Aeromar expand their service and all dominican attendants. The president says that Aeromar will make a Frequent Flyer Club.
Some peoples doesnt know how expensiv it is to lease a aircraft if your country doesnt exist Cat 1.
Big compliments for Aeromar Lineas Aereas Dominicanas

Hi Caboverde,
Do you live in Holland? I would like to know more about the new terminal for SDQ. I'll send you an e-mail as soon as possible. I was in SDQ in 1999 on a flight from SXM to CDG via SDQ on an Air France Boeing 747-200. I didn't see much of the airport as it was already dark, but I would like to see pictures of the current terminal. Have they begun construction of the new terminal?

Ohhh, the Listin Diario, how can I forget about it!!!!
The new terminal in SDQ hasn't been started yet. I think it will take some time until they open the terminal B, so Mexicana is planning on the long run. I don't know if Mexicana is doing the correct thing but I'm sure they are desperately testing all airports in the Caribbean to see where they will start a hub. Amazing!!! and a waste of money!!!
By the way, CaboVerde: Do you know if Air Santo Domingo flight to San Juan is operating with the B727-200 from TranMeridian. I know that the Dominican Republic is CATII so Air Santo Domingo needs to fly a CATI registered aircraft and I saw this TranMeridian arriving in Santo Domingo but I couldn't see were it was coming from.
