Yeah, I read about that today. UF wants to create that route as a direct way to lure professors and researchers to their university.

How large is the airport is up in Gainesville and what aircraft will Continental use?

Who said CO is going to start service? Just because an airport coughs up some cash doesn't mean it's enough to justify an airline starting up a new flight.

Certainly once-daily XR service would be in the cards, that's the type of flights we are looking to add with the new Embraer's. EWR-MLB/EYW/TLH/SFB/GSV/APF/PIE have all been mentioned as possible new ERJ routes (just from FL) once we get the new XR's in. We have close to 50 due next year, so we are going to have to have some place to fly them!

Gainesville Regional Airport serves the city of Gainesville (pop. 100,000) with a further 800,000 within 50 miles of the airport in the surrounding counties.

There are 2 runways, Rwy 10-28 (7503x150ft), and Rwy 6-24 (4147x100ft). 1 terminal to service 2 scheduled airlines, Delta Connection/ASA and US Airways Express/Piedmont Airways with flights only to Atlanta and Charlotte respectively.

Operations (in 1999):

Air Carrier: 1662
Commuter: 11,022
GA: 64,648
Military: 5,378

Total: 81,710 flights

Continental service direct to NY/NJ from Gainesville is seen as a must by the University of Florida (47,000 undergrads) and the City and is the most travelled to destination from here. UF alone generates over $300,000 in business from flights and they people they bring that originate in New York.

The $650,000 raised so far is going to go into a ticket trust fund to show Continental how commited the people of Gainesville are, and will fund travel vouchers on the new route. Continental representatives will be coming next month to evaluate the airport here and see what changes have to be made.

I've flown into ST.Petersburg on PeoplExpress a number of times, it would be nice to once again link EWR with PIE.

Given the amount of fuel the XR would need to make it to KEWR, I doubt the runway at KEYW is long enough to permit anything but a very weight penalized flight.

Typically we get CRJ's and Dash8's, however there seems a weekly 737 that's been flying in. no idea who operates, saw it fly overhead at about 4:00pm yesterday if anyone can help track it down, doesn't seem to be a scheduled, commerical flight.

If CO does go into Gainesville, you can almost bet it will be to IAH and EWR. You don't hire staff etc. to operate 2 flights a day. If you are going to rent ticket counter space etc. you need more than 2 flights. I can see one ERJ heading East from IAH continuing on to EWR vie GNV while another comes from the opposite direction. Do this 2 times a day and you get 4 departures from GNV a day justifying a ground staff and jetway along with a ticket counter. If we are successful in our codeshare with Delta, all of what I've said is out the window as their ground staff would probably work the flights and 2 a day to EWR only wouldn't be a loss.

Actually the interesting thing I believe the plan is to secure flights out West after NY/NJ. I wouldn't worry about some of those costs, however I don't think GNV has any jetways, and the airport/city should be willing to accomodate Continental with whatever they might need.

I see that same random untitled 737 flying into Gainesville occasionally. I looked on flytecomm and can't find anything about it. GNV also sees frequent 757s from Delta for football charters.

Gainesville for sure does not have any Jetways. I've flown out before on ASA and had to walk across the ramp to get to the aircraft.
