Northwest, a few years ago, bought 2 747-300s from Swissair, for their engines. Up untill recently, these airframes were listed for sale, without engines. I cannot find them for sale anymore, and have heard rumors that they were to be scrapped. I think they were stored at MJZ. Can anyone verify the fate of these two airframes for me?

Per Bill Harms' website dated 12/12/02, both 747-357s are still listed as in storage at MJZ. I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that these 2 747s are being dismantled for their spare parts, over a period of time. Regards.

Both N270BC (former HB-IGC) and N705BC (former HB-IGD) were fitted with the higher rated PW JT9D-7R4 engine which is very rare to find on a 747-200. There are only a handful of 742s with this engine, but they include NW's passenger ships 6631, 6632, 6636, 6637 and 6638 as well as cargo aircraft 6744, 6745 and 6746. All the other NW 742s are fitted with the earlier variant JT9D-7Qs which are much more common.

Additionally, both aircraft were already fitted with side cargo doors (since they were delivered to Swissair as Combi variants), which made the conversion to freighter an essentially painless process if NWA so desired. Alas, the aircraft have been mothballed in Marana since late 1999 and they will hence require a bunch of checks before they can be made airworthy again, so they will in all probability be used for parts.

They were equipped with JT9D-7R4G2's which were mostly on late 747-200's 747F-200s and mostly on 300's. Apparentlty these Swissair -357's average about 80,000 hours and were purchased mainly for the engines. They more than likely will be sold because they were listed on several of the broker sites less the engines. They more than likely will be sold, converted to freighters or broken up. If they arent sold NW will part them (since the landing gear alone is worth several million).

I was aware that they were listed for sale. http://www.planemart.com had them listed as of a month ago, but the listing has since been taken down. I also realize that they had up to 85,000 hours on the airframes. What piqued my curiosity was the following:

Back before the 1991 gulf war, I used to spar with John Kalitta. Heard he and other Kalitta made a killing with buying clapped out 747 freighters and chartering them out to the military. I knew that these had the SCD, and was checking the availiability of cargo aircraft available. From what I have found, there are almost none.
