My mother just called work (AA) and while she was on the phone a friend of hers told her that an NW A319's brakes failed as it was taxing into the gate. The plane ran into the terminal and also clipped a wing of an 757...I think the 757 was also a Northwest. My moms friend also took some pics for me so ill have them tomorrow night!

Didn't sound like the brakes failed, the news item makes it sound like it was being towed when it happened.
*An airline spokesman says two mechanics were moving the Northwest Airlines Airbus A319 from a parking space to a gate at about 6:25 a.m. when it struck the loading bridge, causing its landing gear to collapse*
Theres been an increasing number of these lately, either into buildings or into other aircraft, they should really start taking more care!

As airlines are cutting more and more staff to reduce cost and at the same time increase the number of flights, you can expect the number of incidents to increase. Not only do staff have to work faster, they also have to work longer and will probably have less time for training as well. All those factors increase fatigue while reducing proper crewtraining thus increasing the risk of accidents caused by bad judgement or being incapable to judge a developing situation.
Let's just hope that it will be limited to incidents in which no passengers are involved and noone is killed.

Ok, I just went down to the water and checked it out. I am on the wrong side to watch it, but I can tell that the Airbus is on its nose, and a NW 757 is right next to it.
Northwest is also using two gates that they never seem to use as backups, and already have what seem to be a pair of Airbus' there in use already.
Anyone who wants to go and get a good view would probably have one from the north side of the upper outside level of the Delta/Northwest Terminal.

Interesting how mechanics have been putting up a fight to retain R&D with the airlines so that way they can be there when things go wrong or find a problem with a plane before something happens. How ironic that they are causing the damage themselves.

And I have an airport terminal in New York to sell you. Most analyses I read suggest that productivity at the network carriers is not very good. Southwest expects far more productivity from their employees, and they are not noted for lots of gate-maneuvering accidents. And just how does higher productivity reduce training time? Sounds like union agitprop to me.

NW just lost a 757 and an A319............. WOW!
Now wait a minute. NW's 757 and A319 fleet is pretty new. Plus, judging from the pic I saw in that second news link, the damage to both aircraft isn't that bad. I saw more images on Television during news coverage, and it supports my thoughts. Some time ago, and AF A320's nose gear collapse while it was docked to a gate at CDG. When the aircraft went down, it's open pax door ended up getting sheared off the plane. There are pics of it on a.net getting towed away with that door shoved inside sideways. That plane I believe will be repaired.
I'd say after a couple million in insurance payouts to the injured, and a couple cents worth of duct-tape, those two planes will be back in service.

I doubt that the 757 is out of service. It will be repaired.
Remember that 727 and DC-9 collision on the runway at DTW back in 1990 in the fog. The DC-9 of course was destroyed by fire with fatalities. The 727 had its wing mangled badly, but I believe the 727 later returned to service.
Yes it does remind me of the Airplane movie, anyone inside the terminal could attest to that.

Didn't someone just do a post earlier this week saying that LGA has not had any incidents for a while? Just like when there was all that hype about no fatal airliner accidents in the US during 2002, a few days later the crash at CLT happens.
