SriLankan Airlines to fly to Kochi daily from April

Kochi, Jan 19 (UNI) The Civil Aviation Ministry has given SriLankan Airlines clearance to begin the operation of a daily flight between Colombo and Kochi from April next, Sri Lankan Minister for Tourism Gamini Lokuge today said.

He told newspersons here that this would be the 32nd flight operated by SriLankan between Colombo and various destinations in India.

Mr Lokuge, who had talks with Kerala Chief Minister A K Antony and Tourism Minister K V Thomas, said Sri Lanka would like to ink an MoU with Kerala for tourist promotion.

The MoU envisaged diversion of a portion of foreign tourists visiting Sri Lanka to Kerala. Nearly four lakh tourists, mainly from the US, Europe and China, visit the island nation a year.

Sri Lanka would also promote Kerala tourism in that country.

Prof Thomas said increased cooperation with Sri Lanka would help promote tourism in Kerala and the direct flight between Colombo and Kochi would give it a further boost.

State Tourism Secretary T Balakrishnan said the Colombo-based Walker Group had evinced keen interest in promoting tourist resorts in Kerala.

The Sri Lankan Minister was accompanied by Chairman of the Hotel Corporation of Sri Lanka Bodhi Ranasinghe and Tourism Secretary P Ramanujan.

They cut their journey to New Delhi short to meet the Chief Minister and other Ministers who are here in connection with the Global Investor Meet (GIM).

I thought that SriLankan only intends to start three weekly flights to COK. I think they only would be able to go into COK if they would get an additional aircraft. This could be around JUN-JUL03.
