I was wondering whether the engines of the 346 and 744 could be interchangeable (?)? I mean can you use 4 RR Trent 556 on a 744 or 4 PW 4056 on a 346? My assumption would be, in theory, an absolute yes but, in practice, no because the RR Trent 556 would hang too heavy and low under the wings of a 744? However, PW 4056 could fit perfectly under the wings of a 346 but they would look smallish compared to the RR Trent 556? Can anybody please elaborate more on this topic? Thanks.

I would assume the opposite. The PW4056 would be probably to heavy, relatively unefficient and thus costly to operate on an A346 compared to the Trent556.

If things were as easy, Airbus won't hesitate to put some 4056s under the A346s wing in order to win a possible deal with NWA and other die-hard PW customers.

A 744 with Trent 556 would be possible, but todays 774s are usually shipped with higher thrust ratings, IIRC.

Yes,
744s are shipped with engines up to 63,000lb thrust class engines,

Trent 556 would be taking the aircraft back to its first flight with the 744
a lot less thrust, and i would have thought the Trent556 was actually lighter than the RB211

Just a thought.

The Trent 556 may not be lighter (it is bigger after all) but it most likely is.

Its certainly much much more fuel efficient, the RB211 has the worst SFC of all three available 744 engines.

Rolls was planning the Trent 600 for the 747 and its future derivatives.
