MAS' first A332 (9M-MKX), which made its maiden journey from Montreal to Kuala Lumpur yesterday, will be put into its first commercial service on February 22. Initially, MAS will use this aircraft for its flights between Kuala Lumpur and Kuching or Kota Kinabalu, before extending it to Singapore and Penang in March. By the second half of this year, MAS will fully utilize the three A332s in their regional network.
The A332 is currently undergoing pre-service modifications for subsequent inspection and approval by the Malaysian Department of Civial Aviation. The other two A332 are expected to arrive before the end of February and March respectively for similar pre-service modifications and statutory approvals.
The aircraft will be fitted with 48 Business and 186 Economy seats and a freight payload of 10 tonnes. Also, an in-flight entertainment system will be fitted into each seat will be made available when the aircraft starts plying regional routes.
Also, it was reported that Singapore was the largest contributor to passenger traffic at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, contributing about 18.4% of the total traffic at KLIA (around 3.2 million passengers per year). Other large traffic contributor at KLIA was Hong Kong, Bangkok, Jakarta and London (in order). Now we could see how much traffic KLIA gets from London, and that's just from MAS alone since the other cities are served by several other carriers.
