Air India To Hire Crew For First Time In 9 Years

Air India, who have been facing chronic shortages of both pilots and cabin crew, have received clearance from the Ministry of Civil Aviation to recruit for the first time in many years. Air India was facing the prospect of having to cancel flights in the next few months due to non-availability of crew to staff the airplanes.

The last batch of pilots hired was in 1997.

The last batch of cabin crew hired was in 1993.

The airline has received permission as a special exception to hire upto 60 pilots, 400 cabin crew and 200 maintenance engineers. The recruitment process for all other categories of employees is still frozen as per the 1998 order.

Qualifications for Cabin Crew recruitment have been set extremely high. Requirements are :

* Bachelor's degree
* Unmarried
* Indian citizen with valid passport
* Minimum height of 5'2" for women and 5'5" for men
* Age between 18-24
* Normal vision (no eyeglasses/contact lenses)
* Bilingual in English + one Indian language.
* Preference for French, German, Japanese speakers.

Application deadline is March 17th. The advertisements for these positions will appear in the Indian newspapers on February 15th.

all understandable requirements... except this one. Why's 20/20 an absolute must?

You think that is understandable? It's like a regulation from the dark ages... Are the cabin crew subsequently allowed to marry once they work fro Air India, or is that also not permitted?

Presumably they must lead a life of sinful cohabitation with their partner?!

Unmarried = fewer benefits to pay out to spouses, children, and the like.
I would think that this requirement would fall afoul of India's labor laws, unless they're still in the dark ages.

However, it will be nice to see some fresh young faces on board, instead of the usual uncle-jis and auntie-jis.

I must say I'm a tad surprised about the bachelor's degree requrement. I don't want to seem elitist or derogatory regarding cabin crew's workload, but is it not over and beyond what is necessary? I take it it's not the industry norm...would salaries reflect the fact that they have, to all intents and purposes, the academic elite of the country serving drinks and doing emergency drills? I am not saying that people with degrees shouldn't be cabin crew (I am doing my first year or a languages degree now, and am really considering cabin crew as a career path in the future), but I cannot see how a flight attendant's salary can justify the huge financial and time investment of a degree.

Also, why are they looking for 18 year-olds who already have a degree?
I'm a tad confused by the whole thing...

The BACHELORS degree requirement for cabin crew has actually been LOWERED from the last recruitment drive in 1993. Back then, the requirement was for a MASTERS degree, and they were still oversubscribed with applications on a 10 to 1 ratio. Since then, airlines like Jet and Sahara have lowered their levels to a grade 12 education, so AI has lowered theirs as well to be competitive.

The eyesight has actually been in place for ALL positions at Air India for time immemorial. Everyone from a pilot to a ramper is required to have perfect eyesight at time of hire.

Ditto with the unmarried requirement. In fact, ALL the airlines in India (including Jet and Sahara) will only hire single people under 25 as frontline staff.

Simply put, the demand for these jobs is so incredibly high that the airline can afford to institute these higher cutoffs and still be oversubscribed.

As far as the young and unmarried requirement goes, I guess things haven't changed much since 1960 when my Mom interviewed with AI (She ended up working as an airhostess for TWA instead because back then TWA paid a princely starting bonus of Rs. 400).

Hopefully they haven't retained the "fair" requirement as well.

One year appointment as a trainee on monthly stipend + per diem allowances.

Once they begin actual flying, I believe they should get about 80 hours monthly flight time at around $10/hr plus allowances. That is a sizeable sum for someone living in India, especially a single person.

Bidding is done on a seniority points based system within each workgroup (Air Hostesses, Assistant Flight Pursers, Flight Pursers). Inflight Supervisors are management employees, so their schedules are dictated more by their office workload (if applicable).

Ironically enough, many of the senior crew prefer to fly the Gulf turnaround flights because that keeps them away from home less. You can pick up your 80 hours doing QTA (Quick Turn Around) Gulf flights in just 10 working days with minimal layovers, as opposed to a JFK/ORD run which gets you about 45 hours in about 10 working days with longer layovers. HKG and SIN flights also go senior because of the shorter layovers.

Pardon my ignorance but is AI heavily unionised?

The PIA management has managed to take the pilots on with a great degree of success. However the cabin crew are proving a very hard nut to crack. Does IA also suffer from cabin crew intarnsigence?

Pretty much every non-management employee at Air India is unionized, including the pilots and cabin crew.

My current feeling is that both the IPG (Indian Pilots Guild) and the AICCA (All India Cabin Crew Association) are somewhat satisfied with the way the airline is progressing. The payscales do not break the bank, but they are extremely generous in comparison to most Indian wages. The focus right now for both sides is on workrule streamlining, but union-management relations are somewhat healthy at present.

The big controversy at AI right now deals with RETIRED staff. The airline took the unilateral decision last year to CEASE paying retirement benefits to retirees (yes, you heard me right - pensions that they have contributed to over the years are suddenly voided for no good reason) and the matter has been dragged into court by a large group of them.

The current hiring is being conducted due to the ACUTE shortage of crew that has been seen for the last 3-4 months.

It was discussed in this thread from December.

AI has been running flights with 2-3 short of the optimal crew complement lately and have been especially stretched thin by the Hajj charters. There have been times where the entire reserve pool covering an 8 hour period with 4 flights has consisted of a single person. This is an operational nightmare and a disaster waiting to happen.

Are you joking? In a country with rampant unemployment, bachelors degrees are dime a dozen! The last major recruitment for Bus conductors in Kerala,South India had among its list of 80 succesful candidates, 6 post graduates and about 50 graduates.All working for a princely salary of approximately 70 dollars a month!And no perks!

And let us not forget the unspoken rule that for every succesul candidate in Air India who gets in on merit , atleast another three (am I being charitable here?) makes it on extraneous considerations, and you will realise how difficult it is for educated folks back in India to eke out a honest living!

I forgot to mention that 202 of these 400 positions are reserved for SC/ST/OBC candidates. So yes, you are absolutely correct.

Answer: Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe/Other Backward Community


Well intentioned reservation system introduced at the time of independence to help the backward communities. However have lost all relevance now as there is no economic reservation with the result that the people who make it to these reserved posts are people in the communnity who are well off!
A thriving market exists to get false community certificates!

The biggest crime one can do in India is to be born in a forward community, be educated and try to eke out a honest living! You can't, that is the reason so many of our country men are elsewhere!
