Why does DL have so many paint schemes flying? It seems like before they released their most recent scheme they wouldn't still have the old old "pencil" scheme with the black noses flying. Are they ever planning on standarizing the fleet?

It does seem odd that they still have what you call "pencil" scheme still flying when they did their first scheme change in 1997 nearly 6 years ago.

Obviously these colors do not exist on any of the new a/c like the 738, 764 and 772.

I believe that only one 763 has the first scheme still and a handful of 752s and 762s. I think most other aircraft that have not been painted in the latest colors are going to be phased out.

there are MD's still flying with the old colors, and some 733's.

I spent 3 days at ATL in late January. ATL!!! I saw hardly any scheme #1 aircraft. NO 757s, a few MD80s and a few 767-300, NO 767-200. One 727 N521DA, but obviously that's about to go to the desert.

Listen Betty, don't start up with your 'White Zone' s*** again.

Isn't that kind of the case too with their affiliates too ASA and Comair? When I flew into ATL I saw all three schemes on ASA's CRJs, ATRs and Brasilias. Of course the old colors for the Brasilia were still the bare metal with the red and yellow.

It's quite simple really... DL isnt going to pull a perfectly viable plane out of service just to paint it; they're doing them as they come in for maintenance or will be out of the system for any reason/period of time.

I still see the old old Comair scheme every once in a while at KGRR. The color scheme makes the plane look like it's about to fall apart!

Not too long ago I saw one of Comair's special painted CRJ's from the old color scheme days at DTW too. I can't remember if it was the 50th RJ or the CVG jet hub one.

One time I flew three DL MD88s in one day. The first leg was in the old-old scheme, the second was in the old-new scheme and the third in the (you guessed it) new-new scheme. I think it's funny and strangely endearing - whenever I fly Delta, I always try to guess which livery my plane will be in before I see it.
Wow, I really do need a life  Big grin

Actually we have stopped painting everything right now due to the costs. The only thing that saved the paint line in ATL was the need to pant Song and some contracts like Hooter's. We were running three paint lines; one in ATL for 757/737 and two that were contract at PAE for 767 and MD88/90. Contrary to many people's opinion the paint visit has nothing to do with the overhaul visit. Some airlines do work this way but not at DL.

How many Delta aircraft are still painted in the old livery? I'm guessing no more than 15 or 16?

I think the old scheme still looks by far the best of the lot, too bad they decided to change (imho). The 727 (no more in the fleet, I think?) & the MD-11 look fabulous in the old design, as would the 777.

Dalmd88,

When is Delta going to restart painting of their planes in the new scheme?

Painting has been put on standby for the rest of the year we were told. So don't expect any before 2004. If the economy doesn't improve by then I doubt well see the paint lines reopened then.

I was told painting strictly to change the color scheme is put on hold. Aircraft that need painting because the old paint is literally falling off will still be painted.
