Does anyone know if LAX will ever upgrade Tom Bradley International Terminal? Gates are only served by one airbridge. Honestly, its quite pathetic. I mean, look at SFO. I really like their International Terminal.

I've only flown through the TBIT twice, once in 1991 and once in 1999, and I can say that it has been drastically improved. There were services and shops and nicer waiting areas outside of security. However, I would have to agree that once you go through security, it sucks. There was one small newstand and nowhere really nice to sit. The terminal does have a nice immigration area. It is wide and open and tall with big windows.

Yeah, TBIT is quite a packed terminal. It's just a massive place with 75% of international traffic going through there. Just lines and lines of counters.

I don't know if this will happen, but I know that LAX is looking into building a new terminal on the West end of the airport, which is on the outermost perimiter on the beach. They want to build a West Terminal there with parking garages and a people mover going from there, to the TBIT.

They are having problems with the TBIT because it has like 33 airlines there and only 10 gates! That's the whole point of the Remote Gates... when TBIT gets packed or flights are late and the gate isn't empty, they just put the waiting aircraft in the Remote Gates and bus the people to the Immigration area. So I know that they'd like to have a bigger International Terminal.

My posts/replies are strictly my opinion and not that of any company, organization, or Southwest Airlines.

I think LAX has to upgrade its International Terminal. Mostly because it's actually got less jetwalk gate capacity than SFO's new International Terminal that opened at the end of 2000!

Besides, LAX should do this due to the fact that airport will eventually have A380-800's from AF, LH, QF and VS (possibly SQ, too) flying to the airport. Is it small wonder why the GAO report on upgrading airports to support the A380 said it would cost LAX US$1.1 billion to upgrade facilities, while SFO only needs US$77 million in comparison?

Check out the LAX Masterplan web site. It contains several design alternatives that would really change TBIT. Click on the "Alternatives Under Study" tab on the left hand side.

Do you know which alternative is most probable right now? Also, when will construction start? I mean, I don't hear anything going on recently.

I agree the international terminal @ LAX is really bad. I boarded a SQ 747-400 in Los Angeles to NRT and SIN and it took so long compared to other airlines.

The ticket counter area of the terminal is good but once you get to the gates you feel like your in such a small airport.
