Jet slides off runway
March 07, 2003

A BOEING 747 jet carrying 162 people veered off a taxiway onto grass at Melbourne Airport today.

Melbourne airport staff are working to move the United Airlines plane, which has been left stranded short of the terminal.

The United Airlines flight 815 from Sydney to Melbourne landed safely at 11.05am (AEDT) but had problems taxiing to the gate.

None of the 150 passengers and 12 crew aboard were injured, however passengers experienced delays when they were transported from the plane to the terminal by a shuttle bus service.

Passengers on the flight, which originated in Los Angeles, are currently being processed at the airport.

A spokeswoman for the airport said crews were working to take the plane back to the gate and no other flights would be affected.

A United Airlines spokeswoman said early indications were that a mechanical problem was to blame.

150 pax on a leg that is a continuation from LAX. How many disembarked in SYD?

12 crew. Is that 9 F/A's plus the 3 pilots from the LAX...Or do the LAX crews get off in SYD, layover then come out the next day to work the SYD-MEL legs?

150 isn't such a bad number when you consider that this was a through flight from SYD, where paxs had already deplaned.

LAX-SYD usually goes out 85% full on weeknights, and jam packed full on weekends. That 150 is pretty good number for a continuation! There are 2 pilots that fly that leg by the way. I have done it twice now and will be doing it again in 1.5 weeks! I love how fast that SYD-MEL 747-400 takes off!! Hope to see some pics of the overshoot!

I've flown that route and the return UA816 MEL-SYD many times and that load factor is normal. Come to think of it I've never had anyone sit next to me on the plane before. Almost always, the flight time is under an hour and that 744 really rocks on low fuel loads. Straight to FL370/390 and on occasion 410.

According to a United station engineer at Melbourne Airport, the B747-400 had a steering problem right after turning off runway 27. Apparently as the Captain tried to correct the turn, by turning right, the momentum of the B747 saw it virtually slide off the taxiway onto the grass & thats where it stayed.

Also have just heard that two of the air bags used to lift the big Boeing off the dirt split as the B747 was being raised, sending it back further into the soft ground.........(fell so far back into the soft ground it nearly ended back in LAX!!).

So it appears it will be there for quite a while, lots of lights, cranes & activity there as I drove past an hour or so ago.

United always have reasonable loads out of Melbourne, however it is the continuation of UA815 & the start of UA816 which has to go via Sydney now. United have stated they have no plans to change their Australian services & I presume that means UA815/816 as well? UA were the first to fly non-stop to/from Melbourne to LAX & onto JFK some years back!
My understanding of the crew is that they arrive in Sydney on UA815, have 48 hours layover in Sydney, then crew to Melbourne & back on UA815/816, have a further 24 hours rest in Syd, then depart again for LAX. Certainly when UA841/842 was operated from LAX to MEL via AKL for many years this was the way the crew operated it & I presume the Sydney service is no different!

I though UA flew non-stop to Melbourne. Then 150 passengers is more understandable.

But it still can't be very profitable to fly those continuing flights.

Can somebody confirm crew loads. If it states 12 then you can assume that only 2 are flight deck as they would have taken the flight from SYD to MEL and you only need 2. So that leaves 10 FAs to operate a 12 door aircraft, seems pretty low to me?? How many FAs operate UAs 747-400s normally? Many thanks XX

Ouch - not good publicity at all for UA, struggling as it were in Chapter 11, only to see a plane run off course. That could do a lot of damage to its image.

After doing that flight back in June I can tell you it is quite nice having the entire 10 or so seats across all to yourself. I was in the back and had the back last 7 or 8 rows all to myself. The performance of an almost empty 747 is really amazing!!! I too am curious as to what happened to Uniteds nonstop LAX MEL service?

As I understand it late last year the FAA bannned 747's flying with their central fuel tank empty until Boeing had come up with a wiring fix. This put MEL-LAX out of range.

I would be happy to have this refuted by someone who really knows

Just out of curiosity, how could the FAA ban the use of the central fuel tank stopping United from flying this route while Qantas continues with it? Didn't the FAA just make this rulling recently? United hasn't flown the route Non-stop for quite awhile.

What ETA Unknown said was quite right. There is only one flight out of Melbourne for United and that carries passengers to both SFO and LAX flights ie UA 816/862 to SFO. I have flown this many times and even at the checkin counter in Melbourne the flight is shown as MEL-SYD-SFO. Usually there are about 150 in the MEL-SYD leg and in most times the SYD-SFO is quite full. This could be due to other pax connecting from BNE,PER,ADL etc.. UA has a code share agreements with Virgin Blue to those destinations.

The way the media reported it, it was as if it was still landing when it slid off.

Can they go any lower?
