N813ME - First YX MD-80 In New Livery!

Tomorrow, at 11:30 am, the first freshly-painted Midwest Airlines MD-80 aircraft, reg # N813ME, is scheduled to arrive in Milwaukee. She will enter regular service in a couple of days, after trial runs. She should be parked near the hangar on and off until then.

I'll be anxious to see it this weekend here in MKE.

On another note YX's stock price is now down to $1.32. Unfortunately I don't see how it can avoid filing for bankrupcy in a matter of weeks or sooner. Once the war starts, there will be even fewer passengers flying. I think two or three other carriers will also be filing in a matter of months as well.

I got to take a look at N813ME when she was still in the hangar a couple of months or so ago. For the longest time, the plane was sitting in a parking area by the general aviation terminal on Layton Avenue, engineless. This was after she flew into Milwaukee after being purchased from SAS. YX didn't need the plane at the time, but after several months sitting, she was towed to the hangar, and work began on a C-check.

When I went to the hangar, N813ME was getting the new Midwest interior; the carpets were being installed, and the new airline name was already on the forward cabin bulkhead. The cockpit was nearly complete, and I got to sit in the pilot's and copilot's seats. She had one engine on, one engine off, and already had the blue-painted rudder on, balanced. The new seats, still covered in plastic, were sitting on the hangar floor, waiting to be installed. The old SAS seats were stacked toward the front of the hangar, with a sign saying, "DO NOT TOUCH" prominently displayed.

My friend Dominic told me that the plane would fly to San Antonio for paint as soon as the C-check was complete, and she'd been ground-tested. The night the new 717 flew in, N813ME was doing taxy tests, and had been painted with all sorts of funny symbols, including the lettes F R Y on the tail. Dominic said he got to sign his name on her fuselage, along with many of his co-workers.

I have a special relationship to this aircraft now, and hope to fly on her one day. My one regret is not having gotten pictures of her in various stages of metamorphosis!

It sure is nice to have someone on the "inside" to get information from - am I'm glad you are sharing with the rest of us. I remember seeing that plane sit out by Signature for the longest time last year. Glad to hear it's finally getting into service. How often do you get inside the hanger? I was there once a few years back working on a story for a magazine - very cool experience. I got a quick tour through one of the 80s being refurbished.

What has your friend said, if anything, about the possibility of filing bankrupcy? I just don't see any solution coming on the horizon for YX's financial situation. No one is paying the business fares and fuel is too high. Once war starts, this problem is just going to intensify.

Well, for starters, YX offers quite a few standard coach fares for its services, not just business fares. Every time I've flown with them, it's been because their fare was comparable to the ones other airlines were offering to my destination. Now, I'm trying to choose YX as a matter of principle, just to give them my business.

Dominic says the likelihood of the airline filing for bankruptcy isn't very great at this point, but war will make things much worse than they are. He's already been halfway furloughed, and thinks that if we go to war (unfortunately, more a WHEN now, rather than an IF), he will lose his job entirely. There have been massive layoffs, and the Kansas City customer service center was closed. Also, YX has eliminated most meal services, champagne and newspapers. In truth, the airline was paying for its catering out-of-pocket for too long, which really surprised me. Those business-class meals were EXPENSIVE. Not a wise business decision, and now they are paying for it. Fuel costs have been over $1.30 per gallon for awhile, now down to $1.25 per gallon, but they are continuing to rise again. This is causing the airline more problems than anything else.

YX continues to hold on, and management continues to take necessary cost-cutting measures. Let's hope they keep the airline afloat.

Word around MSY is that most if not all flying will stop in several weeks. I hope that's not the case, but it would not surprise me. I've known a couple of YX agents since my days with Vanguard, and I really wish them and all the rest of the Midwest employees the best in this tough time. Hope they can pull it though, they really have a quality product. The old DC-9's will be missed here in New Orleans.

Cre: The likelyhood of an airline filing for bankruptcy does not have anything--necessarily--to do with how many passengers are going to fly them tomorrow. After all, NJ went under during profitable months! Airlines go bankrupt for the same reasons that any company goes bankrupt: They run out of operating capital and can't generate the credit necessary to get cash to run the company.

MSYtristar: Did you work for NJ up until the end? I was one of the MCI crew who showed up Tuesday morning and found out I didn't have a job!

My sense is that fuel costs, above all other problems, are causing the greatest pain right now. Larger carriers have the financial strength to hedge their fuel positions, but the smaller guys have to pay current "pump" rates.

It's kind of ironic. The truly high-cost carriers with deeper financial problems are probably weathering this fuel costs better because of their ability to hedge fuel.
