Why Don't Air India Fly Direct To MAN?

This is a question that's puzzled me for many years, Manchester has a huge Asian population mainly made up of Pakistanis and Indians, PIA fly several flights a week (my even be several a day) into MAN but Air India have no service there and as far as I can remember never have.
I'm assuming the demand simply isn't there to justify a service but it strikes me as a little odd considering the population of the NW.
Anyone know any more about this ?

cheers

Air India began a 2 weekly BOM-DEL-FCO-MAN service using A310s back in 1997ish after wanting a 4 weekly 747 service but they didn't have the equipment or authority to do that. In 1999, they went to 4 weekly but pulled out in April/May 2001 (some 5 weeks after their chairman stated that MAN + 6 or 7 other "key" destinatations would have capcacity increases) due to alleged "losses" they were making. Average loads were in the region of 70%.

It would also need a rewriting the UK-India bilateral as each country is limted to 16 flights per week, with the Virgin flights operating with an AI codeshare and counted as "Indian".

PIA operate upto 3 747/A310s per day, most operating Pakistan-MAN-JFK and return.

Apart from the 2 or 3 "special" flights they did in December 1994, nothing doing! I'm sure they were offered 5th freedom rights from here to JFK but declined them as they wanted them through LHR instead.
