Did AA Ordered More 738s & 772s?

Hi folks...
I was just now browsing thru Boeing's orders page, like I do once a week, when I saw something that just stunned me. Last week, the order history for American's 737-823s stood at 118 firm, with 77 delivered. The 777-223s stood at 47 firm, with 43 delivered. Today just now, I saw the 738s standing at 124 ordered, and the 772s at 54 ordered. I knew AA had options for both these models, but to convert them into firm orders now during these very trying times is beyond my understanding here. Does anyone here have any inside knowledge or any thoughts on this revelation? FYI, these new orders, if accurate, would commences 2006 & after. Thanks & regards.

I think you've hit it-

I don't know the details of this story, but I think I can put together a reasonable guess for you.

They were probably options AA already had on them. The time came to take the delivery slots or give them to someone else, and AA made the gamble that things will be better in 2006... or, at least, they will already have ceased to exist, in which case they won't have to pay for them!!!

So they decided to go ahead and convert options, with the anticipation that they will need them at that late time.

Also, it may just be a late update to something that happened a while back... I certainly haven't seen anything about AA firming up options on justplanes.com or anywhere else...

I don't think AA ordered more aircraft given their current financial difficulties and the threat of war in Iraq.

The order for the 777s was listed as "unidentified customer". It was originally placed 31Dec01 and was most likely a conversion of options. Still surprising that AA at that time, after 9/11, ordered more aircraft. Like AA737-823 said, it will be quite a while before they will take delivery of those newly ordered aircaft. They are getting two more 777s this year; May and June.

Thanks to everyone's replies & theories. I certainly hope that American is around in 2006, as well as in a healthy financial position to accept deliveries of these 738s & 772s. Regards.

AA will take deliveries of 10 763's this year and 2 777's three of the 76's are already here (N342AA-N344AA). The 777's will arrive in June. After that AA has no deliveries scheduled at all. Remember AA sold their 738 delivery slots to QF, and those airplanes are being deliverd to QF in the basic AA configuration. That may be why they still show as AA deliveries. I doubt you will see AA take any more aircraft deliveries until 2008 or so at the very earliest, assuming there is still an AA in 2008.

Just to clarify what Aa777flyer said, American now has 1 738, 6 763s & 3 772s left for delivery later this year. After that, the next deliveries are not scheduled until 2006. Qantas took over 19 738s delivery slots, 15 of which are fulfilled now. So per my math here, American will have 78 738s, 58 763s & 46 772s at fiscal year-end 2003. After that, assuming that AA will see fiscal year 2006, AA will have 46 738s & 8 772s left on the order books. Regards.

Hi ! As for the 777s, AA will get one in May and one in June this year. So only two and not three this year. No idea when the next 777 after that will be delivered.
