In under 2 weeks QF will commence their 3 x weekly services to Chicago via LA.

Does anybody know what the loadings look across F,J and Y for say the first month of the new services on the Chicago to LA sectors.

Lets hope it is a success. QF has been advertising it quite heavily in Australia although I have to wonder if there would be great demand ex Australia for direct Chicago flights with most leisure travellers entering the States via the West or East Coasts.

They've applied for quite a few code shares with AA over ORD as well, which will help when/if they are approved. DFW got dumped after extensive studies showed ORD was a much better option for another tagged flight, so there must be significant reason to go there. (Top of my head stuff - possibly a good number of one stop over ORD markets, than 2 stop via SFW & LAX codes to/from ORD).
As for loads - if Dubya decides to go 4wheel hooning in some sand dunes, everything will look sick for a while I'd imagine !!!

It should work for them rather well as many aussies who travel to the USA go beyond the entry ports of NYC, LAX or SFO. I myself usually need to go to CMH and MKE both reasonably close to ORD so it would suit me rather well, however having just said that my next trip to the USA in April will be with NZ.
Because it was cheap!

I remember when the DC-3 was new!

The load factors will probably be around the same as the JFK flight which average about 10 first 35 J class and around 125 Y class. QF cant fly a full load as they are restricted by the number of pax they can carry as on carriage on domestic flights with in the states. They have traffic rights for QF to QF transfer in LAx to Ord.. Cargo will contribute too the profits by far.

If it is, it must be something new. The current bi-lateral between the USA and Oz allows for:
"South Pacific
Passenger Services
Any designated carrier from either country may operate an unrestricted numer of frequencies, subject to a minimum operation of 4 weekly services, without restriction to aircraft type or passengers, to points within the other country".

There are however, restrictions and limitations in regard to code-share and to the other two routes under the bi-lateral, North Pac and Guam.
The coded restrictions and limitations apply to both international and domestic routes.
This is why QF has never had to "apply" to serve ORD or JFK, but has had to apply for codeshare agreements with AA over ORD.
In effect, if QF had 300 pax from all the northbound flights wanting to connect to ORD or to JFK over LAX they can, under a direct interpretation of the bilateral, which is the same in reverse for UA's tag between SYD-MEL. They have no limitations on *numbers of connecting international traffic pax.*

No freedoms are permitted by either country, although Oz has rights for designated carriers to serve points in the USA from Mexico (with freedoms). From memory, there is a fifth freedom right to serve points in Canada from HNL or SFO but am not currently clued in to the exact wording. Quite possible there was something about coding with freedoms.
If I recall correctly, this was possibly in direct response to U.S. carriers having access to Oz-N.Z. local traffic and a fall back to the golden days of cosy agreements between Oz, USA, Canadian and N.Z. traffic agreements over HNL and all the mix and matches that occurred then.

Is Qantas going to tell the world what there bookings are like for a certain flight.  Yeah sure

After looking at the fare classes available you really can't work out how many seats are available. The most any reservation system is going to show you is 9 for each class. United had about 150 passengers when it ran off the runway in Melbourne last week. Is 150 passengers enough for a 747-400. The important thing is yield. The amount that each passenger is paying for a ticket. Most high fare tickets will usually be booked a week or so before travel so 2 weeks out is still a fair way off.

Qantas probably chose Chicago has it would compete against United Airlines.
