Booking With United For The Summer?

For the United buffs and aviation analysts(in other words, all of us lol), I have a quick question that probably applies to many.

While looking at airfares for a summer trip, I noticed that United is cheaper across the board, both nonstop, and with a DEN connection. As many of you know, however, United has stated that liquidation is possible.

Should I book with United assuming they will still be around by late July, or should I find another carrier?

Any help will be appreciated.

YES...Make your travel arrangements with United for the summer. The recent news about liquidation is going to pave the way for the bankruptcy judge to void the contracts and approve the proposed wage concessions from each of the unions.

I also support making your travel arrangements with United, but given that you have no control over what does/doesn't happen re: a possible shutdown, it'd be prudent and otherwise a common sense idea to take the precaution of paying via credit card. Not a debit card, or a check. That way, should an unfortunate shutdown occur, you'll have more recourse through your credit card provider than you would had you paid by check, and were "just another creditor."

Let me reiterate; support United, just cover yourself, should stuff happen.

Our government recently extended mandates that require another carrier to protect you (for a nominal fee not to exceed something like $25) should UA go bust. However, it’s space-available and you’re not guaranteed transportation on the same days and/or times that are on your ticket.

Would I purchase a ticket for travel on UA beyond May 1 (just the first date of May, nothing special about the date)? Absolutely not!

The news about United saying that WITHOUT the required pay concessions, liquidation is POSSIBLE, has been obvious ever since they first filed chapter 11 on Dec. 9. It's not like employee givebacks just became necessary for survival, they always have been.

I wouldn't advise against booking travel on United, as if the worst happens and they do shut down, you will be accomodated on another airline. Also, book with a credit card, as you can apply for a refund as well.

This will probably not reflect popular opinion, but there is something else to consider.

It may be risky to book on an airline that has a strong threat of liquidation if you have rigid travel plans. My wife and I are planning a trip at the end of the summer to Germany and Poland. The vacation will only be a little over the week, so every day of that trip is very important. If we miss only one day of that trip, we will lose a chance of seeing something that we came all of that distance to see. Here is the problem. If you buy a ticket on an "endangered" airline and have made all your hotel and tour arrangements, you could have a big problem even if your ticket money was recovered. The worst case scenario would be to find out that you no longer have a flight sometime shortly before the trip. By that time, you have paid nonrefundable money for other travel expenses, and it would probably be very difficult to find a comparatively cheap replacement flight in that time period. That means that you could either break the bank buying a new ticket or be forced to miss one or more days of the trip adjusting your schedule.

We found a good deal on KLM/NW, so that is how we are going to make the trip. If UAL had offered a lower fare, I probably would not have booked it because it would be very difficult to change travel plans if we found ourselves suddenly without a ticket. Also, contrary to my posting ID, summertime is not a good time to nonrev to Europe if you have made a very rigid schedule for your trip.

I just bought tickets on UA through Expedia for June 21-June 26, LAX to HNL. Do you think expedia would give us a refund? I want to help United, but we've got lots of activities planned every day, as well as tickets on Aloha to Kuai. I don't want to take a chance and miss my vacation in Hawaii to help United. Is there any more info on the chance of liquidation?
