Name change for national carrier | 18:08 | Beta

BELGRADE -- Thursday – Yugoslav National Airways, the Yugoslav flagship airline better known as JAT, has changed its name to JAT Airways, director Predrag Vujovic announced today.

Vujovic told journalists that the board would ratify the name change at its next session.

He added that a program to change insignia on the company’s aircraft would begin on March 30.

That sounds interesting. I hope they will come up with some beautiful colours on their planes!

Cheers

This has been frequently discussed here, so finally the fact.
And we can expect yet another modification of their colors...

Appropriate since "Yugoslavia" no longer exists. There is still a loose union of two separate republics, now called "Serbia & Montenegro."

To tell you the truth, I very much doubt the colours will be replaced or changed at all. The only difference will be that "Yugoslav Airlines" will be replaced by "Airways". Also, the actual change of that will, I believe come very slowly, that is to say it will be added at scheduled re-paint times. Now, JAT very receantly re-painted all their "ghost" 737s except YU-ANW which I assume will be painted soon. In fact, I think YU-ANW may be the aircraft they are referring to in the press release. I really don't mind, I think JATs current livery is very modern and looks nice...

Now that I think about it, they may need to alter the starboard layout a bit, because "Airways JAT" would look weird... Other than that I think their livery is fine... What do you think? Oh yeah, I'm VERY glad they didn't get rid of the name JAT.

Alex i'm glad to see you back here after quite some time!

The news about the name modification comes to no surprise, and from what i can see there were only two realistic proposals that would envision retaining the current acronym. This would be either JAT Airways or JAT Airlines. Either would have been fine in my opinion.

When translating Airways into Serbian, one can appreciate the fact that it would be precisely translated to Aeroput, the founding name of the airline back in 1927. Regarding your comment about what will be envisioned for the starboard layout; the only answer i can come with is having "JAT Airways" in block letters, replacing "Yugoslav Airlines."

Otherwise the livery and scheme should remain the same. The aircraft truely look attractive, and i hope its kept that way.

Just adding one more thing...

JATs first Boeing 737-400 will commence with service on March 27th.

But will they keep the big "JAT" and just replace "Yugoslav Airlines" with "Airways". One one side it will say "JAT Airways" which is fine, but on the other it would say "Airways JAT". Which would look weird... (You know, just like now it says "Yugoslav Airlines JAT")

Alex, here is what i anticipate the change will be:

- the large block letters (JAT) will remain as is
- on one side "Yugoslav Airlines" block lettering will be replaced by "Airways"
- on the other side "Yugoslav Airlines" block lettering should be replaced by "JAT Airways"
- Thus on the first side it says JAT in large titles followed by Airways in smaller letters, while on the other side it says JAT Airways in smaller letters, followed by JAT in large titles...

This would be a very feasible solution, at least as i can see it. Otherwise, the entire process may require unnecessary redesign of an already exceptional idea.
