Say a certain airline (coughcoughUnitedcough) shuts down. Previous to this I have used frequent flier miles from said airline to get myself a ticket on an airline (coughcoughDeltacough) which has an agreement with the previous airline. If that airline goes under before my date of travel, will my tickets still be valid?

Well, I was thinking not, but I can't decide if the fact that I have a ticket in my hand counts for anything. I mean, would they just cancel my reservation?

Most likely your ticket will still be honored if they go under. If you have a ticketed itinerary and the airline has an agreement with other carriers to honor ticketed passengers, you will be protected in the same manner as all other ticketed passengers.
