Hey all,

I just came across this picture of the first Air Canada A340-500.
It looks nice, especially those RR engines.

Great! Thanks for posting it!

I still haven't heard definitively if AC will be starting a YYZ-HKG route yet. Has this been confirmed?

Panam, TWA, Ansett, Eastern.......AC next? Might be good for Canada.

Neil, we know bloody well that it will be YUL-HKG. I mean obviously there's a huge lucrative un-tapped market for flights to HKG from YUL.

It's SO underserved.  Big grin

I think that if it has not been submitted yet that it probably will not happen this summer...summer sched gets underway in a few weeks...I think that it will just remain on the existing long haul routes like YYZ-NRT, for the summer untill AC can figure out what is going on...if they survive and hammer out the new collective agreements then they can get YYZ-HKG (And YYZ-JNB  Big grin ) going...ACA website still shows the 345 on the YYZ-NRT route through the summer...

AC & the unions have had several years since the 345 was ordered to hammer out the agreements on staffing the ultra-long range flights. So now the 345 will enter service with AC not able to exploit its range. Another failure for AC and its unions.

Well, whatever profits (if any) AC makes on the YYZ-NRT route with the 343 will now likely disappear by using the far more expensive 345. Terrific.

Cool! Thanks for the sneek-peek!
I assume Air canada is hoping to do some financial restructuring in order to pave the way for these new airplanes. The clock must be ticking rather loudly.
What are the odds of AC canceling or futher defering the order?

ScottysAir,

I didn't actually take the picture. I saw the picture on planepictures.net and posted the link here.
I did a search first to make sure it hadn't already been posted.
I realize that the plane is quite a distance away, but thought it would be interesting to post since it is the first picture.

Not everyone can go out and buy an expensive lense, and then on top of that get a tour of the AB ramp on a whim  Big grin

Thanks for bringing the photo to our attention. Those RR's are HUGE! Looks much more appealing than the hair dryers they have slapped on the A342/3.

It might be more cost effective for AC to introduce that Caravelle, maybe to replace 737-200's. I think it would look good in the Zip jelly bean colours. Just a thought.

First things that popped in my head was .. increased cargo lift ability and no more Anchorage stops in bad headwinds.

Does the current YYZ-NRT 343 make frequent ANC stops due the headwinds?

If so, the 345 might make sense, even if it does not utilize the range its designed for.

YYZ-SYD was one of the proposals, but if it happens, wont be anytime soon. Maybe when they get 600's and use those to Asia.

I think it was YVR-SYD and/or YYZ-HKG. Both of which would utilize the exceptional range of the 345 if only for low-yield routes.

YYZ-SYD, I dont think would be the best option.. but AC can market themselves as the only ones offering a non-stop to Australia from the East Coast.... but very unrealistic.

I've rarely heard of stops in ANC, but I know that the flight is payload restricted...and with cargo being such a big part of this route paying pax have been asked to get off....The current ACA001 does not carry nearly the same amount of people/cargo as CDN001 did back in the DC-10 days...By adding the 345 to the route the could avoid the payload restrictions and really use the route to it's max just like CP did....

So the old DC-10-30ER had a greater payload/range than the current baseline 343? That's amazing.

What's the usual pax restriction on YYZ-NRT? 30 passengers or so?

25 Captaingomes : Slawko, I have a hard time believing that. The A340-300 is a slightly larger aircraft than the DC-10-30. I also doubt they flew non-stop from YYZ. Tak
26 Yyz717 : CP did indeed fly YYZ-NRT vv nonstop with their DC-10-30ER until 1999.
27 Captaingomes : Wow, bring back the 3-holer!
28 Lymanm : It is asinine that AC & unions cannot agree on rest procedures. Why waste a perfectly good aircraft? This thing has the longest range of anything curr
29 DC-10 Levo : That's one hell of a dirty aircraft peeking into the shot from the left. I've been trying to find a closer shot of this aircraft but have had no luck
30 Red Panda : Is DC-10-30ER really that amazing? How can it fly from YYZ-NRT non-stop without any technical stop in between? How about payload restrictions? If A343
