SriLankan (Mar31, 2003)
Is in talks with Airbus about the least of 6 Airbus A340-300s. The aircraft were previously operated by Singapore Airlines and were taken back by Boeing as an exchange for the B777s.

Swissgabe reported this earlier, it looks like the A330s are on the way out. I assume the A330s will go to Emirates now. If this deal does go ahead, Srilankan will have then 9 A340-300s!. Does anyone whats the number of seats difference between SriLankan's A330-200 and the A340-300?

SriLankan A332s are operated with 30 Business Class and 251 Economy Class seats while the A343s have 24 / 288 respectively.

SAS_A330-300, yes, range and maybe even cargo where a reason. But it is also cheaper to operate A340 iso A330, thats another reason.

By the sounds of the deal, it looks like they are going for extra seating capacity by replacing 332s with 343. On a given route with a reference load within the 330s range envelope, I think the 330 is the more economical airplane. Two-engines are cheaper to operate than four.

The difference between 340 and 330 seating isn't that big. Right, in the 340 there are around 37 Y class seats more but there are two C Class rows missing which would be around 2-3 Y class rows, 9 seats of each would be 27 seats. So there is a difference of not more than 10 seats left.

I don't know the actual figures and it might also depend on the engines used. But both, the A330 and the A340 use around 6500l/h kerosene.

The range seems to be quite important as well.

I think in the long-run, 10 extra seats on each flight could generate a considerable amount of additional revenue. I read somewhere that Qantas selected the 738 over the 320 because it hold two extra rows. The revenue benefit of extra seats must have been large for QF because they could have saved on significant pilot training costs with the 320.

I think the biggest savings obtained by having two engines instead of four between the 330 and 340 would come from lower maintenance costs of having two fewer engines.

You seem to have more information than me on the fuel burn on the two types.

I think the 773ER would be great for Sri Lankan routes to Europe. The airline that owns them EK could order them also so I could see it happening.

SriLankan Airlines seems to be happy with it's Airbus aircraft and the 773ER would be too big. Btw: EK does NOT own UL. Emirates only has around 42% or SriLankan Airlines, the main share holder is still the Sri Lanka Government.

You could be right with the 4 vs. 2 engines. Yes, 10 seats could generate some extra revenue if the flight is full. A few month ago SriLankan Airlines had an excellent load factor on its network and we all hope that they can continue that way.

One more reason, those mentioned SQ A340 are a few years older than the current A330 they operate. So leasing costs will go down as well.
I once heard, that SriLankan Airlines could save between 15-20 million USD a year if they replace the A330 with the A340.
