Air India is considering a complete withdrawal of flights to Hong Kong after 49 years of continuous service.

This follows a drop in bookings to Hong Kong of over 70%. The airline has already slashed capacity to Hong Kong by 80%, but future bookings are being severely affected by the current health crisis.

The unions representing Air India pilots and Air India Cabin Crew have also issued directives to their members to not operate flights to Hong Kong.

Air India will operate flights till the end of April using management crew only, but will likely withdraw completely from the market from May onwards.

WOW! AI pulling out of HKG after almost 50 years. Do you think AI will pull out of HKG for good or just until the SARS situation gets better and the economy gets better.

How is Cathay Pacific Airways doing on the DEL-HKG and BOM-BKK-HKG route? Do they have plans to reduce or cut flights to India. I know CX flew A330-300s and 777-300s to India what aircraft did AI fly?

This is unfortunate but with the SARS outbreak worsening in Hong Kong, this comes to no one’s surprise here. AI will obviously resume flights to HKG once the situation is over and demand picks up. At this point who knows when that will happen.

Cathay’s flights to India have obviously been effected as well, but it’s probably one of the least effected services in the CX network as there are many Indians who’ve made Hong Kong their home, and who frequently travel to India to visit family. Nonetheless, they’ll be cut too (if they haven’t already) but I don’t think CX will suspend all flights to India.

Air India operates the A310-300 to HKG. They also fly to KIX from HKG, as an extension of their DEL-BOM-HKG route.

Fuck this SARS outbreak. Fuck it.

AI uses a B743-Combi on the DEL-BOM-HKG-KIX route. I have seen pics of an AI B744 also at HKG. I dont know if its a combi 744 though, so I would imagine that it was being used in lieu of the A310, rather than the 743 extension to KIX.

Air India have not used the 747 to hong Kong for a long time now. The 743 no longer comes in and I don't believe their 744s have ever operated here.

AI currently operates the A310 to HKG and has been doing so for the last few years. Prior to that they operated the 743 Combi and the 742. There was a brief period (about 3 months) when the 744 was also used on the route.

AI has slashed HKG capacity significantly in the last 2 years. There were 9 weekly India-HKG flights in September 2001 (plus the 2 Osaka services), that were reduced to 7 immediately after, then reduced to 5 with the winter schedule, then to 4 when the SARS outbreak began, now down to 2 flights and down to 0 next month. No word how (or if) Osaka flights will be rerouted, but it will likely be through BKK.

It'll be great to see more AI flights in BKK. Thanks for the update.
