What Is Going On With This MD-11's Wing? (The slats underneath) And why are they different than all others I've seen?

I've always seen it like this:

Thanks ahead of time,
DIA

P.S. If the answers are obvious, then I apologize, I've had a long week and am not thinking very clear at this point.

Part of the PIP for Delta's M11s involved redesigned flap fairings.

The MD-11, like the DC-10, does not have slats that stick out past the trailing edge of the main wings. The DC-10 never did, and I thought the MD-11 is in the same boat. Compare it to any other pic of the trailing edge of any MD-11. Post the pic if you find one that matches the Delta pic.

Of course. Just after I post again. . .my answer. Thanks 777236ER. I thought I was going nuts!

Was Delta the only airline to do this?

Cheers,
DIA

I clearly see what your saying, and until you made this post I had no idea of this design. Thats very interesting, I to am curious what this different design is all about.

I think so. After AA cursed the M11 and bitched about it openly, McDD did lots to boost the range (mainly) of the thing. I think Delta were the only ones to recieve the full all singing and dancing package.

The first one (DL) has the revised flaps fairings which extend quite a bit over the trailing edge unlike the more ´classic ´ layout on earlier prod.- MD-11´s .

As the armchair specialist that I am I can only tell you that I remind MDD and Swissair and other carriers as well together having developed these ´canoe fairings´as part of a whole package of aerodynamics enhancement back in the nineties to eventually overcome the initial shortcomings of the performances the MD-11 suffered from when it was introduced into airline service.

What kind of aerodynamic enhancements do the new fairings provide?

The new fairings are mainly reducing drag (hence saving fuel ,don´t have the exact figures however ).They have been developed for the PW-powered MD-11´s since the PW ´s were consuming more fuel than predicted .

Later MD-11 aircraft were fitted with these new flap-fairings. It's not from one particular airline but rather an aerodynamic design improvement applied by McDonnell Douglas.
