A lot of them are going to lose their jobs anyway.

Part of the deal is that American is going to lay off a significant number of workers.

hopefully American won't screw this up and end up making up contracts in bankruptcy court.

it's kind of a lose-lose situation for all the workers at American right now.

A round of applause for the flight attendants who voted "yes" to the labor and wage concessions. Your unselfish vote has given American Airlines a fighting chance to make some progress during this unprecedented downturn in the commercial airline industry.

Sadly, we'll be saying farewell to some of our fellow employees as a result of our restructuring efforts, but we look forward to the day that we can welcome those "family members" back aboard a leaner and more competitive American Airlines, the one that their sacrifice is now helping to create. There's a lot of hard work to be done at this time and we're going to do our best to keep those Silver Birds shining. We're going to fly high and we're going to fly far. We're wearing the red, the white and the blue and we're going to make you proud.

Long live American Airlines!

As a former AA employee, maybe it was just the airport where I worked, people were a bunch a$$holes. I would hope that they would go bankrupt to clean house. Just a disgruntled opinion.

AAgent--most of the FA furloughs will come from the TWA people--without the furlough pay that was graciously given up(without the company asking for it) by APFA.

John Ward(APFA President) wouldn't even return phone calls from the IAM(the bargaining agent of the TWA FA's), summarily put all TWA FA's on the bottom of the list and restricted them to STL and, now, allows AA to put them out of a job with no severance at all. The FA's going out the door now have over 25 years seniority--most nearing 30 years. They won't be coming back.

P.S.--Kevi, you've always been very gracious and I hope this post doesn't change that. But, I can't sit quietly while these people get kicked out with no furlough pay. Sad

You're right about it being terribly unfortunate that the ex-TWA flight attendants were placed at the bottom of the seniority list and that they will likely be furloughed without the benefit of severance pay. But then again, the whole point is to save the airline, and at the moment the issue on the front burner is money. Some terribly painful decisions had to be made... and they had to be made quickly. It was heard that many of the flight attendants likened the new contract offerings as having to decide whether to cut off their arm or their leg. However, it was clear to the majority that failing to make that sacrifice would mean that they had chosen to cut their own throat. Their analogy was quite strong, but "cuts" straight to the point. Hard choices had to made. Thankfully they made the decision to take a flesh wound and live to fight another day. Sadly, there will be many individuals that will suffer as a result of the restructuring efforts. As unfortunate and undesirable as that may be, it is ultimately quite necessary to restructure the airline into what it must become in order to survive in the new economy.

To those that may be furloughed I offer these thoughts...

The sun will rise tomorrow and your life will go on. You will experience both extreme anger and deep sadness. You will spend more time with your family and friends. Be thankful for that time. It is a gift without price. Opportunity will come again. Prepare yourself for that moment and you will emerge a new and better person for the experience. These things I know because I have walked a mile in your shoes. My job was an immediate casualty of the September 11th attacks. I am the sole breadwinner for my family of five and I was six months without work before being blessed with the opportunity to return to a new and completely different job with American. I made it through those trying times and so will you. Perhaps you too will once again rejoin the proud family that is American Airlines. Whatever the future may hold, God bless and keep you.

I'll take your post as a compliment. It is quite flattering that you would think that I work in corporate communications. However, the truth is that my profile is completely accurate as I do work in the AAdvantage Customer Service department. I do not work with the communications team in any capacity. (But that might be an interesting opportunity now that you mention it.) The fact is that I really love my job and I really love American Airlines. Previously, I was in a completely unrelated field of work. Unhappy in that career, I decided to make a big change...I decided to follow a childhood dream to work for an airline. It was in the year 2000 that I made that decision. I began researching airlines and came to the conclusion that American was the airline for which I should work. In early 2001 I took my first job with American Airlines as a ticket agent at DFW airport. Sadly, it was later that same year that I found myself jobless as a result of the September 11th attacks. In early 2002 I was delighted to have an opportunity to again work for American Airlines in the AAdvantage Customer Service department. Thankfully, I continue to enjoy working in that capacity for American. I hope this bit of insight into my history sheds a little light on my perspective of the American Airlines experience.

And by the way, thanks for the idea! I'll have to keep an eye out for a job with corporate communications. That would be a great career opportunity!
