I was escorting one of our AirTran mechanics in PNS yesterday, he came down to repair our pushbach and tugs, which had been down for the longest time...anyway...as he peformed his duties, I asked em, I said have your heard anything as to what airplane we might go with next year?
He said yeah, Airbus, he added AirTran pilots are presently beginning training for the A319...he went on to say that United turned down a couple A319's and that we, AirTran are hoping to get a good deal on them.
Now keep in mind, AirTran has signed a one year contract with Ryan International to operate two A320's to the west coast for us...those planes are theres...Ryan will fly the planes and F/A's will be theres also...but it was interesting to hear that FL just really might be going in the Airbus direction in purchasing/leasing airplanes of there own.

I am one of the AirTran pilots, and I can say unequivocally that NO AirTran pilots (other than a couple of management types) are undergoing any training for any other aircraft. There are 4 management pilots that went for type rating training, two on the Airbus, and two on the B737NG, as part of the ONGOING evaluation and negotiation process. We are negotiating for more than a "couple" of aircraft, and will go with whichever manufacturer offers the most attractive package.

I hear something different each week about which aircraft we will go with. Each time, it's a "done deal". Rumors are rampant, but most assuredly, no decision has been made. At least none that the company is going public with, or even releasing to any "insiders"...least of all any mechanics, pilots or FAs.

Any news or gossip these days from AirTran Airways, JetBlue, Alaska Airlines, Southwest, ATA, Frontier and Midwest Airlines are anxiously welcomed and refreshing. Good on these airlines for they are the future majors of the USA! Grow and prosper, buy the legacy aircraft fleet cheap.

The mundane news that is coming out of the sado-masochistic legacy "G6" - UA, AA, DL, CO, NW, and US has been nothing but wack, cut, beat, wip, loose and whimper. Shame on them. They throw millions of dollars at consultants/advisors, turn deaf ears, and blind eyes, read the writing on the wall, it is in blood. Good riddin's, you get what you deserve and this is the last USD 3 Billion dollar bail out, for this year...again. Chapter 7 for them all? Tired of the whine.

NEW YORK -- Anyone waiting for things to get back to "normal" in the aviation industry "is in denial," said Joe Leonard, chairman and CEO of the profitable, low-cost AirTran Airways, because "the recovery is here; it has happened."
Addressing the Wings Club here April 16, he said airline CEOs typically complain the industry has 25% too much capacity.

So, "why hasn't it been reduced?" Leonard asked -- then answered his own question: "A lot of the legacy carriers are still playing the market-share game.... and they have destroyed their balance sheets in the process."

Ok Airline Enthusiast. (is that grammatically correct enough for you)? I didnt realize we were in English class and that you would consider judging the story I posted based on when or where I use certain words.
Be sure the next time you go to the grocery store to follow the sign "Ten items or fewer" for that would be grammatically correct and not "Ten items or less"
In addition, M717 I really respect that fact you are one of our pilots, you all do a great job. But I would further state maybe not all FL pilots would be getting trained on the new bird we get in addition, just because you have not heard word of it...doesnt make it untrue...again...I dont want to get into an argument...again I really respect all our crew...but lets just wait and see what happens before we jump to final conclusion....
Also....I suppose the sense the flying public has is that AirTran is still a small carrier...yeah in proportion to the major carriers yes...but we are growing and in two or three years I would say we will be a major carrier and will be classfied as such.

I guess that applies to you, too. Right?

I happen to have some information from the suppliers' side. My information appears to be consistent with M717's. OTOH, the lease of Ryan International's two 320 can be construed as the direction Air Tran might be taking, but it could be purely coincidential, too.

I'm not jumping to any conclusions. I am stating fact. No decision has been made, and no pilots are in training. As a member of our pilot's union, where we operate under a contract that has strict rules for the filling of vacancies, I would absolutely know if ANY AirTran pilot was being trained on a new piece of equipment. Not only would I know if it was happening, I would know the names of those involved. The company would be required to first, put the vacancies up for bid. Secondly, they would be required to publish the results of this bid, with names and training dates.

There was a "phantom bid" recently, where the pilots had the option to bid either as Capt or FO on "XXX"...(no specific aircraft, just whatever new aircraft it is). This was done so the company could have a rough guess where the new aircraft would fall, seniority wise, and to have an estimate on the training impact. Particularly for those pilots currently on the DC-9. It was non-binding, and was done purely for the reasons stated. Again, NO PILOTS (other than the 4 management pilots previously mentioned) are training in any aircraft other than those currently operated. And those are the facts. I have done my best to give you and others who might be interested some accurate information. What you choose to do with it is up to you. I can't see that I would have anything additional to add.

I usually don't continue to respond to these threads after I start a post...but I do want to clarify something.
I never said I had all the answers, nor did I say the news I stated was a done deal but that a mechanic I spoke with yesterday stated such. "That United has turned down a couple A319's".. for whatever reason, which is possible UAL really is not financially sound enough to be taking more orders...and that FL might try and get them for a good price...could be false but then again if your not at the top which I trust non of us are...it could be true also.
The mechanic I spoke with is not the president and doesnt know all the answers...it was just some info I was offering.
That is all....you all can offer your opinions which I welcome, I, however, am finished.

I really wonder about that one  Insane would AirTran go to the expense of training crews and starting mx (or expense of farming out that mx to Acir Canada or Northwest) for a few planes at a good price, I think not.

Honestly, I hope FL goes with Boeing, because I don't like A32Xs (which the A319 would count). I find them uncomfortable and less desirable to fly in.

That being said, I'm certain AirTran will go with whichever type gives it the best combination of operating costs and initial purchase price, as well as financing, not to mention passenger preference (which right now is looking more and more B, since FL is a US-based, US-flying carrier and a lot of people do not understand that many US and UK companies are involved with building A's products--of course, that will be a very small part of the decision).

Anyway, AirTran has announced that they will be making a decision this summer about what aircraft they're going to use for long-range routes in the future. I expect we'll find out sometime in June or July.

As for the RyanAir deal being an indicator: I think that RyanAir simply offered the best wet-lease deal that AirTran was willing to go with. The A vs B thing probably didn't enter into it.

Actually, Ryan Air bid was accepted over PACE/Transmeridien who offered the Boeing 757. Air Tran was not very enthusiastic about filling up a 757 versus an A320. That's the only reason they went with Ryan, plus the aircraft were available when they needed them.

Anyway, AirTran is looking at MANY aircraft, including RJs. What they go with is anyone's guessing, or fighting over :P

I'm pretty sure had AirTran looked at PACE I would have heard about it.

In a lot of ways, AirTran right now is much like Southwest was about 10 years ago. In the early 90s, Southwest was flying under the radar of most of the flying public; when Eastern, Pan Am, and Midway (mk. 1) folded, Southwest immediately headed east, and grew into a national airline. AirTran is poised to do the same thing within the next 5 years. As long as AirTran keeps a very good management team intact, and don't make any boneheaded business decisions (like say starting flights to Europe), they are set to be the next Southwest Airlines, and I think they'll eventually trump Southwest in the LCC market. With the JetConnect product, they've allowed themselves a better way of fleet management, which Southwest can only do by putting either a smaller 737 or a larger 737 on a route. No matter if AirTran chooses the A319/320 or the 737-700/800, they will have a better range of fleet size to better serve their cities, and I wouldn't be surprised if JetConnect adds a 70 seater RJ in the future (either operated by Air Wisconsin or by AirTran themselves).
