Qantas/LanChile To Beirut (BEY)?

A while ago I heard that Qantas was looking at starting non-stop service to Beirut (BEY) because of the extremely large Lebanese community in Sydney.

Then about half a year ago I think, I heard that LanChile was making plans to fly Madrid - Beirut - Denpasar - Sydney 3 times a week on A340s. I heard that British Airways, Iberia, and Qantas would code-share on this route.

Now why on earth would LanChile fly from Madrid beats me.

Anyone know the status of this proposed route? Or if Qantas is still considering flying the route with it's own metal?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey BA,

Sounds like a pretty exotic route. I vaguely remember hearing something about QF and Beirut, but haven't heard anything recently. I think QF should consider ATH now that OA quit Australia (Melbourne has a massive Greek population). I haven't heard about LanChile's plans, but that seems to be a little far-fetched.

ATH would be a good route for Qantas.

However the reason why I think Qantas would benefit in flying to BEY is because MEA used to operate BEY-KUL-SYD on it's old 742s. I heard the route was extremely successful and would always be full on the big 747s. The reason why they dropped it was because they wanted to standardize there fleet and had to get rid of the 747s. The A310s were operated on the route for a short while after they got rid of the 742s, but they proved to be uneconomical so they dropped the route.

Qantas has the right equipment to do it however.

ATH is not a good route for Qantas at all. Same with BEY. Majority of pax is vfr so they dont want to pay lots of money. Very little demand for high yield fares. Now who knows maybe in the future, AO may consider secondary European destinations like ATH.

Qantas has a long history with Beirut, and with Athens.

Way back when, both were refueling stops on the flights from Sydney to London - I'm talking about Constellations here.

With the arrival of the 707's, Beirut was dropped, but Athens was still big for QF - Melbourne, Australia, is the third or fourth largest Greek city in the world.

This stayed after the 747, but then there was huge over-capacity - just about every European airline started flying to Australia, and QF slimmed down to it's highest yield routes.

A number of those airlines have stopped serving Oz, and with the "change" in the Middle East situation, I guess QF is, as always, looking at it's "old" cities again. There have also been several QF charter flights to a number of the eastern Med destinations, even to Cyprus.

Melbourne has the largest Greek community in the world outside of Greece.
Something to be proud of - anyone who has done the circut of greek restaurants on Lygon St. knows what I mean. mmmm.

Anyway - I see no reason why Qantas should not fly to Athens and Beirut. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Actually there is starting to be a lot of Australian companies that are having there Middle East regional headquarters in Beirut. So business traffic is growing between Australia and Lebanon.

Not to mention that many Malaysian companies have offices in Beirut too. When MEA flew to Sydney it was with a stop in KUL. Perhaps Qantas could do the same to pick up some business travelers. They'd be competing with Malaysia Airlines, but they'd have an advantage. Malaysia Airlines service to BEY is one-stop through DXB.

All I know is MEA was doing well to Sydney but was forced to drop it because they had to get rid of there 742s to reduce maintenance costs and maintain commonality.

Anyone know anything about the LanChile route?
