My family is going home to visit relatives in Ireland this June. We are flying from Des Moines to Shannon, stopping in Newark on Continental.
Our flights are as follows:
LV: DES MOINES 400P
AR: NEWARK 725P
LV: NEWARK 830P
AR SHANNON 745A
We are a bit concerned about the hour connection in Newark. We know you would not be able to make a connection like this at JFK, but I was at Newark briefly once in November and I found it no so hard to get around in. Do you think we will have ample time to make our connection?

For the Des Moines-Ireland segment you should be fine (same terminal connection), however the return portion might be iffy since some CO International flights arrive at Terminal B and some at Terminal C.

It is pretty tight, but you should be fine. The Continental Express flight from Des Moines will arrive at Terminal C and the Shannon flight will depart from C as well. Terminal C is quite large, it has three concourses, C1, C2, and C3 but a lot of long haul flights to Europe depart now from C3 and a number of CoEx flights also use C3, the newest part of the terminal.
If you miss the connection to Shannon, Continental should be able to help you with several options, including a 9:25pm code share flight on Virgin Atlantic to London/Heathrow where you can then backtrack to Shannon on Aer Lingus or Virgin Express. There is also a later evening departure to Glasgow, Scotland and there are connection opportunities I am sure from GLA to SNN. If you are really worried, you might want to write down the alternatives just in case.

The return should be fine. I believe the Gatwick flight 19 arrives at C. The airport signage at EWR indicates that only CO 29 uses Terminal B, which is the earlier departure from LGW. Your flight from EWR to Des Moines will depart from C so you will be fine.

I was travelling ABQ-IAH-EWR-Ireland last summer.
I flew first from Shannon to the States, my return flight had to be to Dublin as it left later from EWR than the flight to SNN. To get the flight home to SNN the connection at IAH to EWR was 45mins which the agent wouldn't book for me as she said CO were under no obligation to put me on a later flight in case my arrival from ABQ was delayed. It turned out I made it in plenty of time at IAH to make that short connection to EWR, but had to wait for about 2 1/2 hours for a later flight to EWR. When I arrived at Newark on that later flight the Shannon flight still had not left but had to go on the flight to DUB and drive down through Ireland the day after.
It'll be no problem I hope for you.
That day our flight to Dublin was delayed from EWR about 45 minutes, but still arrived early as frequently happens with eastbound TA flights
