Does anyone know why VA bought ANZ, and CX's 747-200's rather than A340's? Is it the greater loads they will be able to get on?
THanks,

I don't know for sure but I would guess earlier availability. This is also the one of the reasons why Northwest is supposedly looking for more DC-10's rather then ordering new airplanes.

They are only leasing them. I guess they will be ordering some 340 to replace them in a year or 2. But they are experimenting with new route like the one to the Carribean and if it does not work out it is much easir to give back then a new 340. I gues Richard has only signed a 1 year deal to begin with. He normally does!!!

Virgin Atlantic, do you follow your news close enough? The 5 Air New Zealand 747-200s were bought not leased. The 2 Cathay Pacific Airways 747-200s were leased for three years with and option to buy. The 747-200s bring in more profit than the A340-300s on the routes that Virgin flys. I believe they have 1 747-400 on order and 1-2 A340-300s. Also 8 A340-600s.

Sorry Iain, I was a little harsh on the last post. Also, CX's 747s were leased for 5 years possibly. It may also now be 10 A340-600s but news on this is blurry at best.

Your apology is excepted. I must admit I thought it was a bit harsh reading it the first time especailly as I E-mail you the head office address and was never thanked for that. When I heard about these planes I thought there were 9 4 from CX and 5 from ANZ. At that time they were just talking lease. And in Richard book he went into detail how he only wanted 1 year leases when he started the airline. I am pretty sure he did this with the forst 3 or 4 planes. As he has gotten larger he is more comfratable in signing longer deals!
Well I hope we are still buds.

We are still buds, I was just a little tired. Thank you for the information. Do you plan to fly Virgin soon?
