Interesting choices of aircraft between the B733 going to Shuttle and the B752 going to Song.

Very old news. Delta is removing some if not all the 737-800's in the Shuttle operation and redeploying them to domestic routes and some transcons from Atlanta because these planes have both the capacity and the range and are therefore better utilized on these routes. Also, DL no longer operates the 727 and the 737-800 is a good replacement for that type.

Delta probably has too much capacity in the mainline right now and therefore chose the 757 for Song because it is a highly efficient aircraft with very low operating costs and therefore well suited for a low cost operation.

The Shuttle from LGA to BOS and DCA is very competitive and since 09/11/01 many travellers have shown greater enthusiasm for the Amtrak Acela service. Furthermore, American has entered the shuttle foray with ERJ flights up to 10 times a day to each city.

The 737-300's do not have the same range capabilities as the -800 and are a small fleet type in the Delta system, just 30-40 aircraft, therefore, it does make sense to isolate 12 or 15 of them to Shuttle operations.

Actually, DAL has only nine (9) 737-300's slated for shuttle service. These are the 737 with glass cockpits and operate as an entirely seperate category at DAL. It's my current category.

Didn't Delta just take the shuttle -300s out of storage?

Did I hear MD88Captain correctly in saying that only 9 of Delta's 737-300s are Glass Cockpit.

If my memory serves me correctly, Delta's glass-cockpit 737s were acquired from a European airline. I've also heard that they lack the reliability of the rest of the Delta 737 fleet.

Yes, only nine of the 737-300's are glass cockpit. These airplanes were acquired from Germania. And no the other 737-300 A/C have not been retired, those being ships 201-213 and 251-254.

231 and 232 are still in storage. Delta had 17 737-800's in shuttle 3725-3741. Now it is down to ships 3726- 3736

They from Germania and they are pieces of junk. The Shuttle has gone to an every other hour operation. They are going out crowded if not full and are oversold, leaving passengers at the gate waiting for the next shuttle in 2 hours.

They are unreliable because DL still hasn't bought spare parts for the aircraft. They were in the desert, they thought that they'd lease them, but market conditions for used 737's are awful so they decided to brush off the sand and put them on the shuttle and free up the -800's for domestic mainline service.

Guys, Delta got 13 737-347s from Western. ( Ships 201-213) Then, they bought 13 737-300s ex-Germainia. These were 35Bs, 35Ds, 3L9s, and two ex-Lh -330s. The purchase was around 1998. They were not bought for the shuttle.

Hey L1011, nobody said they were bought for shuttle. Also, delta bought 9 airplanes from Germania, the other 4 were acquired from Western Pacific. They were not bought for shuttle but that is where they are being used now, except for 201-213(ex Western) and 251-254(ex West Pac)
