Just received word that Aloha will begin service to RNO beginning July 1. It will be one flight a day, RNO-SNA-HNL. It's our first direct service to Hawaii. Maybe not big news for those of you at bigger airports like SFO or ORD, but we're happy!

I'm sorry, ma'am, I don't work for the airline.

Pretty interesting... but kinda' strange. RNO and HNL both seem like pretty low yield destinations.

Maybe low-yeild, but don't forget the RNO-SNA traffic as well. Plus, Hawaiian natives love Vegas, they can gamble AND ski in RNO. I'm wondering if FATflyer thinks FAT may be next  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Good for Reno, though I must say I am surprised by this announcement. I really never thought there was/would be demand between Reno and HNL....and I find the routing via Orange County also unusual. Is there any traffic between Orange County and Reno, does any other airline offer flights in this market? Or did Aloha just adding Reno on to an SNA flight?

Southern California is our 3rd largest market, after Las Vegas and San Francisco. Currently, WN is the only carrier to that area, with several daily flights to LAX. Alaska is also adding some LAX flights next month. But there is no non-stop service to SNA, or ONT or BUR, either. You can thank the American Airlines purchase of Reno Air for that.

LOL  Big thumbs up

OzarkD9S,

I don't know if FAT-HNL is next but I know that airline/airport talks have happened. Aloha is definitely developing the secondary markets in the West and FAT is one of largest non-served markets to Hawaii.

Lots of both business and vacation travel out of Fresno to Hawaii. I know several people in Fresno personally who own vacation homes (not timeshares) in Hawaii. There is also a lot of leisure traffic because the Univ of Hawaii plays in the WAC with both Fresno State and Nevada-Reno. Many teams and fans travelling both ways.

I'd look for an announcement of FAT-HNL in the coming months, probably with a stop somewhere else.

Was talking to an AQ FA on my most recent trip and she said that AQ is looking to open a pilot base on the mainland as they continue to expand, most likely in OAK. She said that a lot of the pilots live in the mainland (some as far away as Detroit) and want to open up a base.

I recently flew Aloha from Oakland to Honolulu, and was very impressed with the service. It's interesting to me that Aloha is using smaller planes for Transpacific hops, and thus, is really able to penetrate these smaller markets.

Compare that to Hawaiian, also making a big Mainland jump, and flying larger planes, thus limited in it's ability to enter markets.

Hope Reno takes to Aloha's service -- it's really spectacular!

Re: Fresno....am I the only one sensing the irony here, for a Hawaiian airline to start large plane service from Fresno to another California city?

IntraCalifornia would not be unique for AQ. Aloha currently operates SMF-BUR-HNL.

correction, swa does also fly recently just added nonstop to burbank and san diego once a week nonstop on saturdays. america west about a year ago had offered twice daily nonstops on sna-rno, but that was before aa pulled out of the route, i bet it would work now with all the loyal america west fliers out of orange county.

I'd be thrilled if AQ started FAT-SAN-HNL. With no service to either city yet (and no other airline serving FAT-SAN, for that matter), I think AQ could very well carve out a niche on this route.

I`m happy to see that there is something going on in Reno.
I was living in Reno when there was QQ (Reno Air) established an US-Air, Delta, American, United, Southwest, America West, Alaska, Northwest, TWA (came 1995) were more common in Reno than now! Since AA took over Reno Air it has been pretty quite out there (except for Southwest Airlines  Smile)
1994 I could fly from RNO-LAX-FRA on Delta, now I have to fly RNO-SLC-ATL-FRA which takes 4 hours more of flying time. US Is gone, UA still available via SFO, NW were via DTW now only possible RNP-MSP-DTW-FRA which also takes 3 hours more of traveling time. I loved the RNO-STL-LGW Route but also this is memory! I hate American Airlines for doing such bad things to us, the customer. I personally avoid flying American Airlines!!!!!!

Actually, I was pointing out the irony of FAT gaining non-RJ, non-prop jet service to any other California city. By a non Mainland airline.

Flyboy7974,
there are some interesting discussions happening between FAT and several airlines right now. It's beyond "the won't you consider us" pitch stage. The next 18 months are sizing up to be surprising to people.

Aaron,

I was just thinking about your comment concerning a HNL-SAN-FAT routing. Interesting. That would add a twist that I hadn't thought about. HNL-SAN-FAT would provide connections to 3 large US Navy operations. Most people know about HNL and SAN but don't realize that 30 miles south of Fresno is NAS Lemoore, the Navy's largest air base and home to the entire west coast fighter/attack capability, (14 F/A-18 Hornet squadrons) and much of the training that used to be conducted at Miramar.

When will Aloha start flying to the smaller cites in the east????? I know a HNL-SAN-BDL or HNL-SAN-PVD could possibly work, however this takes a lot more A/C time than a SAN-FAT or SNA-RNO..... I can dream...

You never know. DTW has had talks with Aloha about DTW-OAK-HNL service ... it'd make sense since only NK flies DTW-OAK nonstop, and the service is seasonal -- the time period it's suspended is time time period travel to HNL is at its crux.

Of course, nothing's happened... and NK was suppose to switch its service to year-round. Maybe it already has - I'm too lazy to look it up.
