I heard this also, from a friend, but did not think much of the rumor -I was always under the impression that the French Government "wants" AF to maintain the PPT-LAX-CDG route and AF would continue to fly it for that reason alone; there is also some high-yeild goverment traffic on the route in addition to tourism (and the tourist segment is not that bad either, no rock-bottom fares on the Tahiti route and many tourist are high end pax who like to sit up front - I have flown to PPT twice, both times it was packed up front and about 70% in the back - some pax were even downgraded.)
However, Air Tahiti Nui seems to be doing very well with the route, especially the PPT-LAX segment and has increased frequency to 10 times per week with 4 or 5 flights going on to Paris......that is far more service that AF (or UTA, for us older guys) has ever offered on the route......maybe AF will code-share with Air Tahiti Nui since it seems that the Tahitian carrier has a better focus on the route.

I am an AF cabin crew based in Tahiti and frankly we get to know these thinks first hand...
Yet We have been assured that AF will continue to fly to Tahiti for another 3 to 5 years.
Then AF might close its cabin crew base only an continue the flights with AF plane with Paris crew, no more Tahitian cabin attendants...
That's all, and having spoken to some very important people from the french polynesian government they said that right now, ATN doesn't have what it takes to survive alone on the route, and need the AF presence in Tahiti.
So so far, AF is going to serve Tahiti as it is a route that has 86 % load for the year and is making money !
I do understand that if AF goes it will be for political reasons more than economic ones !!!
Anyway... We will see what the future holds for us Tahitian crew...

I am actually quite surprised the CDG-LAX-PPT flight operates only 3 times a week... as DutchJet said, I have heard the flights are always packed (on a 744 that holds 396 pax!) and to non-rev on those flights is nearly impossible.
In any case, glad to hear AF will continue its presence there ...

Given the fact that TN is getting good loads on the CDG-LAX-PPT route why don't the French government agree to have TN fly this route as a codeshare with AF and fly it daily? Tahiti is a VERY popular destination for well-heeled tourists and if someone can do a cruise line operation that starts and ends in Tahiti that could add even more traffic (at least on the LAX-PPT sector).
