Allegiant Air just announced that they will start DEN-LAS service on July 3. Flights will operate Thurs, Fri, Sun, Mon on an all coach MD-83.

While they have opened a base in Denver to support their charter contract with Apple Vacations, this one took me by surprise. I don't know if I would want to be part of a battle for Denver routes right now. But with only 1 flight operating 4 days a week they may feel they can skim a few customers and operate under the radar.

They could do TOL-DEN-LAS...get the TOL-DEN O&D market and LAS market. Just an idea of course.  Big grin

The Yahoo Article say Las Vegas based Allegiant. I thought they were Fresno based, am I wrong?

AS739X~

You are correct! Allegiant based in Fresno not Las Vegas. The media error or typo.

Is Apple vacations selling LAS or any other tour operators selling this flight? It could also be the days or after Apple is through with the plane so why not use it more and make some money? Is LAS giving the airline anything to do this flight, that is also possible to explain this.

this is a surprise since allegiant has always avoided direct competition with the big boys, but i guess they are trying for better utilization from their a/c working the denver to mexico charters.

The last paragraph of the article explains it.
The airline's administrative headquarters are in Las Vegas and operational headquarters are in Fresno.

Allegiant is a little different these days as far as the HQ. With the new majority investment by Maurice Gallagher, who lives in Las Vegas, G4 relocated some administrative functions to Las Vegas. The operations side stayed in Fresno.

hey fatflyer, i think i asked you this before, but can't remember what you said. do you know if allegiant is running any charters directly into lake tahoe, or are all of the northern charters going into reno airport. i flew them before into tvl, but that's when they were competing with tahoe air out of tvl, and loads were light.

All the charters for Harrahs-Tahoe fly into Reno. Each flight into Reno is used to feed passengers to all of Harrahs Northern Nevada properties. That contract has just been extended and expanded so Harrahs must be happy. I wouldn't say that G4 never operates into TVL. It is possible that they have had a client who chartered an aircraft for a flight into Tahoe such as for a group of skiers. But there are no ongoing Allegiant services into TVL anymore.

Luv2fly,
I don't believe that Apple is booking on these flights. But Allegiant has a plane at DEN for Apple and opened a base there (they currently are hiring Flight Attendants and a Mechanic for DEN). So I think this is just to utilize the aircraft at night. Their Allegiant Vacations division books a lot of packages on all the LAS flights being started and has very good relations with many of the casinos. Nothing from LAS was offered to start flights.

I think it is a GREAT idea and why not use the aircraft after the tour operator is done for the day. You have the crew already there, the support staff in place, and you do not make money while the plane is just sitting around. Good job. And LAS is a destination that sells itself, and has a high demand.

Luv2fly,
I agree. Most carriers operate their scheduled services during the day then use the aircraft for night time charters. Why not do the opposite? If the plane is scheduled for Apple charters during the day, use it for a scheduled run at night to a destination that can support such a flight, like LAS.

And by having it used as a charter during the day the traveling public becomes familiar with your company. And you can build brand awareness and also market share all at once.
