Back in the days before 9/11, I was eating lunch and watching planes at MCI and Air Force One landed on 19R. He used most of the runway since he was going over to the TWA base...it kind of pissed off the pilots of the airliners that had been holding for it's arrival as the thing taxied leisurely down the runway.

1. Before Stapleton closed, the Pope came to Denver. AF1 flew in, followed by the Pope's Alitalia 742, followed by the old AF1 707 (the VP was on it this time). The Pope ended up leaving on an AA 763ER back to Rome.
2. Since then, I've seen AF1 at DIA a few times, as well as Buckley Air Base here in Colorado. Even watched AF1 fly from DIA to Buckley. . .maybe the shortest 747 flight ever!?!?

The first time I saw AF1 was shortly after 9/11 when President Bush came to ORD to give a speech (more of a pep talk) to employees of United and American. Parts of that speech were later used in commercials urging Americans to travel, use hotels, eat out, etc. I've seen it come into ORD a couple of times since then.
I was also able to come close up to AF2 (the 757) at MDW during the 2000 Presidential campaign. I used to work at MDW at the time so I had the opportunity to take some pictures of it on the ramp before getting chased off by CPD.

AIRLINERS.NET CREW FORUM MODERATOR
George W. Bush comes into MSP periodically, particularly around election times to drum up support for Republican candidates in a largely-Democratic area. AF1 always lands on 12L/30R at MSP. Before they come in, police cars get lined up at various places around the airport perimeter, a MN State Patrol chopper runs around the airport (and often stares at the ramp agents), some Air National Guard F18's run around the airport, all the traffic gets held, and in comes AF1. They always use 12L/30R as that is closest to the Air National Guard base, where they park AF1. Quite a bird. I hear it costs roughly $40000/hr to operate. What a great use of our tax dollars to drum up partisan political support. I don't care whose party it is or whether I support the president's ideas or not, it is just a huge waste to gallivant around the world in a private jet the size of a building in order to support ANY political party on taxpayer money.

As it was landing on Runway 1R at MCI. I was watching from the ramp at gate 18 (Terminal A), so I didn't have a great view of it. It was still on the ramp at TWA when I left work a few hours later, though. One of the largest airplanes we see at MCI (except when NWA does touch-and-goes with the 744s).

I saw AF-1 landing at EWR back in '99, bringing President Clinton into town for some speeches.
Since 9-11 AF-1 usually lands at McGuire AFB in Central Jersey when President Bush comes to the NYC area.
When President Bush went to the WTC site to meet with recovery workers on 9-14 security was TIGHT. He landed at McGuire AFB where he was met by Mayor Giulianni and Governor Pataki who flew helicopters out to greet the President.
A bunch of different helicopters then flew the 40-45 miles from McGuire AFB to the Westside heliport, and then drove down the Joe Dimmagio West Side Drive to the World Trade Center recovery site.
I've often seen two Marine Corps 1 helios flying in formation with two Marine Corps Chinooks prior to a Presidential visit to the area, they fly right over my house.

I got a walk through tour in 1988(?) on the Presidential 707 at NAS Moffatt, CA. I was killing time at Base Ops waiting on a broken airplane. The building was crawling with Secret Service agents and we just asked for a tour. "Ask and ye shall receive." The agent just looked at our Navy IDs and gave us a front to back tour. It was very cool.

I have seen AF-1 in person as well. It was a few years back when President Clinton was in KY, and it was parked at LEX. There are a few advantages to a small airport and one of those advantages is that planes are often parked very close to the road. That was the case with AF-1, it was great to see it that close. I went by IND this morning on my way to work, hoping to see it again today, but it was not to be.
By the way, when I went by IND this morning, there was an European charter airlines 747 parked there, does anyone know why this plane was in IND?

There is no AF2...at least not one which the president flies. Any time the president steps onto an air force plane it becomes AF-1....same with the army (Army-1) and his helicopter (Marine-1). But yes there are two VC-25s...
