London's Olympic Bid: Good News For Aviation?

With the UK government having announced its support today for London's bid for the 2012 Olympics, there will be a focus on transport in London, always a subject of great debate.

As you're aware, the UK government has an ongoing project to look into runway capacity all over the United Kingdom, with the needs of the SE making the headlines almost weekly. With this in mind and in the context of the Olympic bid, it seems highly unlikely that the Olympic bid will remain credible if the UK doesn't allow expansion of airports. And with so many non European travellers coming in, the emphasis will be on Heathrow.

Roll on, R3.

Wonder will Branson beat BA in being the official airline of the 2012 bid; it might be a good pretext to "reviewing" his interest in Concorde, in favour of this new opportunity?

Before you start about Branson beating BA, remember that London has not been granted olympic status yet. There are a number of competing cities, including Paris, New York and Moscow.

I do believe that London stands no chance if no credible expansion plans are announced for local infrastructure. Not just the airports! The underground is reaching capacity as well! Unless London can schedule every olympic event outside rush-hours TFL will never ever cope.

Well, they're competing with:

Paris (airport capacity);

Moscow (three airports... mostly underutilized, new SVO terminal);

New York (world's greatest city: JFK has open space in morning for charters as well as relatively new IAB and vacant terminal which can be brought into commission)

etc....

I don't think that airport capcity will be THE factor in determining the Olympic site as you all think it is. London has plenty of airports, with Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, and others available. LHR is not the only airport in London.

When it comes down to the Olympics, it will come down to who has the best available infrastructure overall. I think that the IOC would make their decisions more on where they can get arenas for sporting matches rather than airports. I personally think NYC stands the best chance right now (I'm biased though), because they have pretty much all the facilities (baseball: Yankee Stadium; swimming at Columbia; basketball and boxing/wrestling at MSG; soccer at Giants Stadium, and we still have Shea, Continental Airlines Arena, Nassau Colliseum, and more availble)

Toronto might also be in the running for those games but it all depends on what happens with the 2008 Vancouver bid for the winter olympics. If they get those games than it would be impossible for Toronto to get 2012. No sense in wasting good money.
