Low Cost Airline Employee Salaries

I was talking to a hiring manager at JetBlue and she said the $14/hour salary I received at Delta "was a lot". I received that salary after my freshman year of college when I worked in ATL.

I was wondering what the average salary is at a low cost airline for full time ground based employees who have no option for overtime pay.

Her comment struck me as odd. I really didn't think I was paid that much by Delta. This is also weird because JetBlue is located in New York City where the cost of living is astronomical compared to Atlanta.

Well they might pay a low price to start tho they offer perks such as profit sharing - and yes they are making a profit, and stock options as well, and ask yourself this how many JetBlue and SouthWest employees are facing lay offs.

I don't want to base my whole income off of profit sharing and stock options. There are a lot of things that can happen to an airline's stock in one year.

But the real point is that it is an employer's market out there today. An employer can pick and choose what kind of talent they want and offer them a whole lot less money than what they have received in the past. So in essence I don't disagree in what the low cost carriers are paying for talent these days.

But what about the future? How many people will want to live and work in New York City on $12/hour once the economy improves? I think it will be very interesting to see how JetBlue reacts when the New York City economy improves and unemployment starts to decline. Then the prospective employee will have the bargaining power and not the employer.

That is always true tho it seems like JetBlue has a very happy and productive and those high airlines salaries with ANY airline are like full service airlines, a thing of the past. Does anyone really believe that USAir is ever going to be paid what they use to be, UAL is going to get all they gave up back, and AA ever restoring pay levels to what they were. And now Delta is seeking pay cuts, people the writing is on the wall, like Dylan said "the times they are a changing!"

About 6 years ago when American went to American Eagle in Wichita, KS (ICT) the ticket agent salaries went from about $17/hr to $5.50/hr. The same week Eagle was trying to hire people at $5.50/hr, the McDonalds near the airport had a sign offering $6/hr.
BTW, some of the employees Eagle hired had a hard time passing the drug tests, and did not have a very good attendance rate. You get what you pay for.

You do get what you pay for and American Eagle is a commuter carrier. So from main line to commuter would be a decrease in loads and overall work. And the ticket agents most likely were offered the chance to relocate after all they are union.

AirTran starting pay is $8.75 in ATL.

As a sup, I get about $13.50 an hour.

I know I make more than our Airlink F/O's and I mean I make twice as much. I don't know how long this will happen. But until our CEO's stop taking their Bonouses and take a huge cut in their pay I will vote down every wage Giveback the company ask for. I know I'm not alone. I work hard for my money.

HP CSR's start at around 7.67/hr and ramp agents at 7.50/hr. The ramp agents get fairly good raises, but CSR's have no pay scale and have no idea what they will make in 5,10,15 years. After 5 years I get 8.83/hr as a CSR, when I was on the ramp at 4 years with the company I was at 10.24/hr. I no longer work at HP, I could not continue driving from MKE to ORD everyday. Plus the airline biz has lost all its fun.

American flights went pure Eagle Wichita for 18 months. Then when 18 months was up they started bringing in some mainline aircraft, but worked them with Eagle ground personnel. Once AA goes Eagle, it must only have Eagle flights for 18 months. The 18 month period was merely a way to get AA personnel out of ICT and reduce ground employee costs.

Low Cost Carriers tend to pay $7.50 to $9 per hour for starting salary. $14 at Delta is a goldmine. As a supervisor at O'Hare for a United Express carrier, my employees started at $7.25 / hr and I was at $12.20... this was back in 97... O'Hare still pays about $8.00 / hr for the same airline..

Back in the 70's, when I really wanted an airline job, I applied at damn near every airline in Dallas - except Southwest. I just didn't see how a rinky-dink little airline like that would ever pay me enough to live on. I kick myself today for not putting in an application. Had I done so, the profit sharing and stock purchase plans would have made me a millionaire by my 40th birthday.

The LCC employee pay rates are better than what many of the third party ground handlers pay. Many of them pay at least a dollar less than what the LCCs start at; even subsidiaries of the mainline carriers pay less. When I worked for ASA, our starting salary was about $1.40 less than what Delta started their rampers out at, and we worked more flights a shift that a similar ramp crew @ DL would. But working OT would actually put one's ASA paycheck into the same neighborhood as an average DL ramper.

I don't know if Eagle pay is $5.50/hr... I believe it's a bit more. While so many people believe "mainline" agent pay is out of hand, I disagree. Many of my coworkers, with over 20+ years of seniority making $21-$23/hr is not unreasonable. That's about $45,000-$50,000 a year, full-time!

AA agents, majority part-time-therefore making less than the figure presented above, while not union, do have union-like rules in regards to job protection. These procedures were adopted after the major layoffs of 9/11. The new rules were developed after many concerns from the workgroups and believe it or not, management listened to agent input through many surveys and meetings. When I was placed on furlough recently,  Sad I was given the option of bumping agents with less seniority in certain cities and was actually offered openings in three other stations (prefer not to state what cities were offered), one being almost 3,000 miles away! I don't think I was given enough time to decide, but in either case, I made my decision and took furlough.

JetBlue employees are new, give some of them, a few years and you'll notice a change.  Big grin
