I heard a couple months ago I believe it was that Mesa Airlines would begin operating Dash 8 Q200s on behalf of United Express at DEN, so is there any news about this? Haven't heard if they have started, or if the talks just seized.

The origianl plan was for Mesa to start Dash 8 service to replace the service UAL was going to loose by Air Wisconsin phasing out the Do328s. No one has heard much about it since the original announcement. The 328s are going away quickly. I believe Air Wisconsin may only have 3 or 4 left. They are supposed to be completely retired in July.

As a side note... UAL put a gun to the head of its current express carriers and forced everyone to rebid on the United Express contracts. In order to keep express flying, some workgroups have taken concessions so as to be competetive with Mesa.

Everyone (Air Wisconsin, Skywest, ACA, and MESA) are waiting patiently to see who will be express carriers in the future. We hope UAL will make the announcement soon. Probably within a couple of weeks. I beleive the other companies with competing bids are Trans States and Chautauqua.

So to answer your question... I don't think anyone (even UAL) really knows yet.

Its sorta weird... those Do328s were all made in like 1994 and 1995, originally new for Mountain Air Express (subsidiary of WP).

Aren't they very modern, advanced turboprops, well suited for the mountainous market?

Anyway, I can say I wouldn't be the first to hop on a Mesa UAX turboprop - UA packed Mesa up and kicked them to the curb not all that long ago due to horrible service quality. Not the partner a bankrupt company seeking to improve customer value would normally want.

The D328's are very modern all glass cockpit and upgraded avionics.

If UA has any brains they will not use YV, by far one of the worst regional carriers out there. YV can't seem to do anything right, I always hated the fact the HP used YV for HP express when I was at HP. Hopefully UA will keep Air Wis...I always like flying them and they seem to have fairly good service everytime I have flown them.

Thanks for the kind comments about Air Willy... we try very hard to please the people we work for and the people that ride on us.

Dornier Farchild's insolvency is what prompted the demise of the 328's for Air Wisconsin. The airplane is a wonderful piece of machinery, the problem is it became very expensive to operate. My understanding is that there were several maintenance contracts (engines... maintenance "power by the hour") that were tossed out by the bankruptcy judge when Fairchild filed insolvency. The canceling of those contracts has made the airplane prohibitively expensive to operate. So much so, that the judge allowed Air Wisconsin to cancel the leases on the airplanes without penalty. So... the airplane are going away now.

Hope that sheds some light on the subject of why the airplanes are disappearing.

As another side note. I don't think anyone wants to see Mesa as a UAL express carrier. UAL has fired them and sued them in the past. Its my understanding that their relationship with Frontier is less than friendly because of their lackluster performance. But, the damage has already been done to our paychecks. Classic whipsawing... all because no one will stand up to Jonny O.... not that I'm bitter or anything.

Well I hope that UAL will keep Air Wisconsin in business, as well as Mesa! Both great carriers!
