What's being called the "crown jewel" of the three billion dollar Logan Modernization (originally Logan 2000 ), today the newly expanded Terminal E opened to the first passengers. Today was limited operation with only Northwest and Virgin utilizing the new check-in hall, tomorrow, 20 May 2003, British Airways will begin checking-in there as well. Slowly over the next few weeks more airlines will be moving up as well. The goal is to eventually consolidate all foreign flagged airlines into the one terminal (at the moment, departures are split between Terminals C and E).
The new terminal features a massive check-in hall with 96 separate, common-use positions plus another 12 separate, dedicated ticketing positions for the airlines. A glass façade gives a nice view of the downtown skyline and a new roadway system separates the arrivals and departures (something that was always a sore point with the old Terminal E). This is just phase one. Over the coming months and years more concessions will be built and the gate areas and immigration and customs areas will be rebuilt allowing greater utilization of the building and making Boston a more attractive city to international carriers.
