When you get that visa, make sure that your chosen exit date is a few extra days longer than when you actually plan to leave. No one seems to know for sure what would happen if you overstayed your visa due to being bumped. I actually asked this on a thread a while back, and no one knew. Russia is very strict with the entry and exit dates. Even if you were not travelling standby, it is still recommended that everyone who applies for that visa extends the exit date out beyond the time of intended departure. Russia is an interesting place to visit. Hope you have a great trip!

first of all just curious...what airline will you non-rev on, I don't think AEROFLOT acknowleges other carriers, do they?
Secondly, we flew with a exit date beyond the itended departure and had to pay,....I believe $200, but I may we wrong..
Delta has DL30/31 from JFK non-stop...or you can fly a European Carrier...I'm not sure how friendly/understanding the AEROFLOT hired agents for other carriers are going to be of non-revvers, anyway have a great trip, I'd like to know the dates, because we might be at SVO around the same time...also travelling from the US.

For this purpose, you could probably get away with a transit visa. It's generally valid for a day or two, but maybe longer if your means of entering/leaving the country is very slow (I can recommend the trans-siberian!). Otherwise (and for more flexibility) get a tourist visa.
Each Russian embassy seems to have a great deal of independence. Expect opening hours and fees (and often paperwork requirements) to be quite arbitrary, although US citizens are reliably charged more than others. Take every relevant piece of paper that you have.
I once found myself needing a visa urgently, without all the documents (inward and outward tickets, proof of accommodation) that that the consular clerk wanted. I said the magic words "can I pay extra...?" and had a visa (and entry and exit permit) within 15 minutes. Don't count on that kind of activity, though.
All visas must be "registered" on arrival; if you're staying in a hotel they will offer to do this for you, although certain other agencies can too.
You might or might not get fined if trying to leave with an unregistered visa, and the fine could well vary according to departure point. The same for other incorrect paperwork; entry/exit permits (they come with the visa) or immigration or customs forms (which are usually handed out before arrival).
One guy I travelled with managed to leave without a customs deklaratsia, simply explaining that an official had taken both copies on arrival; another guy left the country with rather more money than when arriving (he got carried away with an ATM). Both of these are supposedly offences, but both got away with little more than a raised eyebrow.
SVO used to (and probably still does) have a special consular office offering special while-u-wait visas before going through passport control. However, the requirements are fairly awkward, and it's not really a good idea to rely on something like this. Any given airline might not let you board a flight to SVO without a visa, anyway..?

Russia is a great place to visit!
But bewear that DL 30/31 is often oversold even in the winter off season. Or at least it was when I lived in Moscow from 92-01. This is largly due to the US gov traffic and adoptions. As the US gov requires that its personel fly a US flag carrier to and from the US when ever possible.
So I would suggest trying to go VIA a Euro gateway. But again in the Summer many of the Euro Carriers flights are also full, especially the early morning depts from SVO that connect to Trans-Atlantic flights.

I had thought about trying KLM I've had good experiences with them and plus we get ID95's on them. But I will most likely have passes on LH,CSA,LOT just incase. Cause I think KLM only has one flight a day from SVO-AMS

I would give my left......leg.....to go to Moscow. Please let us all know how you did non reving over there. Someone mentioned my worst fear for non reving internationally - given how dingy some of our agents are here, how willing are they going to be to accept my non rev ticket?

Revving to Moscow isn't bad, it comes up $465 on AEROFLOT from JFK round-trip in Economy or $2200 in Business on AEROFLOT from JFK.
Do you have passes for non-revving on Aeroflot???? And once you know your dates....once again, we might be travelling round the same time

AIR FRANCE and AEROFLOT have tonnes of flights to Paris, or KLM has 737-900s to Amsterdam (at least they used to) You SHOULD find vacant seats in the premium cabin, but DL30/31 I admit, seats are a hard find...but out of Moscow, getting out in Biz/First should be fairly simple.
