Alaska Airlines Service To SLC Or ABQ?

Does AS plan to add SLC or ABQ to it's destinations in the future. It seems like they serve all states in the west except Utah and New Mexico. Is there a reason why AS has overlooked SLC and ABQ. Both cities are already served non-stop from SEA with Southwest Airlines. I think SWA flies one non-stop SEA-ABQ and three non-stop SEA-SLC. Delta Airlines obviously also flies non-stop SEA-SLC. So there is a market for both cities from SEA.

I think Horizon Air should fly SEA-SLC and Alaska Airlines fly SEA-ABQ.

Also anybody got any information on which destination AS or QX is looking at next anywhere in the US, Canada or Mexico.

The current cities rumored for expansion are:

ATL
ABQ
PHL
PIT
MSY
MKE
MCI
TUL
ICT
OKC
SLC
STL
SJO

Given Alaska's strategy of using longhaul flying to satisfy its customer base in SEA, (and lowering CASM with longer flying) the likely candidates would be SEA-ATL, SEA-PHL, and SEA-MSY.

SJO has always been rumored, but I don't see this one happening anytime within the next year.

You answered it in your statement. Southwest already serves it. We do not want to compete with them in more markets then we already have to.
1.ABQ- we had plans and actually a gate from what I hear, but when WN announced service, we decided it was't in our best judgement.
2.SLC- if we were to start it, we would have done it before the Olympic's. Also another market, just not in our best interest. DL as of today has 4 flights daily, 2 of them being 757's. Horizon would be no match against that.
EA CO AS may have somemote input as well.

Not one person on this forum can deny that SEA-MSY would be a great route for AS. SEA and BOS are really the only two major cities w/o New Orleans nonstops. Time to change that.  Smile

I thought CMH was also on the Alaska rumor list. Before Orlando service from Seattle was announced, they had a list of potential cities, in which Columbus was included. Is it still a possibility?

That would be something seeing AS down in SJO.

AS739X- I understand what you were saying about Southwest already on the route but wouldn't AS want to at least compete with SWA on the route. SWA flies Seattle to Boise, Spokane, Sacramento, San Jose, Oakland, Reno, Las Vegas and Phoenix non-stop and so does AS. Wouldn't be the same as to ABQ. I see your point about SLC when DL flies the route with 752's and sometimes 763.

I think Milwaukee could be a good city that isn't yet served non-stop from SEA and New Orleans.

With ABQ though you are talking about a much smaller city then SJC,OAK,LAS,and PHX. We also compete in those markets cause we are established there. We have frequent flyers ( our MVP's). With ABQ, it would be a city, if Im not mistaken the size of RNO or so, but where we out not est. Belive me I would have liked it, but the O/D traffic isn't there. And no connections going south. Like I said we did have the intent, but bailed out from what I hear. Take care.

Actually ABQ has a population of about 400,000 people. That is much larger than RNO. I think it would be a good market to serve.

But with ABQ you also draw in the Santa Fe area and tourists headed there. The way ABQ has growen the whole area, Santa Fe included, could approach 700,000.

Well QX and 747, I won't get into a population stat thing with you. 400K or 700K, thats not enough people to compliment AS ans WN to Seattle. I am just stating what I know. We were going to go into ABQ, and when WN started service, we decided to withdraw the plan. Let me bring some other factors in. AIRCRAFT, we have only so many planes to go around. There are a lot better markets for the new longer range planes we are getting. We are looking farther east, and QX doesn't have enough CR7's right now. Please note the RIGHT NOW! They are at only half of the purchase amount, so maybe you could see QX there down the road from LAX,SEA, and even here from SFO. I could also see and extention of the QX flight into PHX going on to ABQ.

depart SEA - 830am
Arrive MSY - 255pm

Depart MSY - 400pm
Arrive SEA - 650pm

I can just see it now...daily 737-700 service....

Who can tell that I want AS down here badly?  Smile

You crack me up MSYTristar.....I will tell you one thing, it would be only a 40min. turn time. You will never see the plane on the ground that long. Only Seattle gets that! Maybe if Un-tied goes down, we can see a SFO-MSY and LAX-MSY as well.SEA comes first of course.
