Hi guys,

As I was looking at the recent uploaded pics on the database, I noticed South African Airways uses many types of widebodies to fly to ZRH: 332 (bmi), 342, 747SP, 743, 742. Is there a reason for this ??? Or does SAA have a real steady schedule for its aircrafts and I guess crews.

I hope someone can answer this for me !!!!

South African was mainly using B747-300s during 2002, they then changed to B747-200s, B747-300s and B747SPs during winter and then to B747-200s and B747-300s in spring. Since May they are operating B747-200s and A340-200s, from June 5 on however, all flights will be operated with A340-200s.

Yes, SAA was mainly flying with B747-300 and A340-200 the last months...

Correct me if i'm wrong...

But nice for spotters that SAA is flying lots of different types to ZRH...

The A330's are just flown to ZRH for maintenance like many other A330 operators do (SR Technics is a licensed and well known maintenance and overhaul company). It brings lots of nice stuff to ZRH...

Thx for the infos guys.

- But what was the purpose of leasing that single A340-200 ?? Pilots training for the A346 ?? Extra capacity ??

- How long will the bmi A332 stay with SAA ?? Do they operate 2 A332's right now ? I've seen one with SAA colours and one with bmi colors.

Does someone have infos on future SAA fleet plans ?

Thx again,

F.B

F.B., it's not just a single A340-200! ZS-SLB, Number 2, has arrived in JNB a few days ago. I'm not sure, however, how many more A342 they will get...

It's correct about the A330's: G-WWBD is operating in full SAA colours while G-WWBB has full bmi colours.

SAA will only get 5 ex-LH A340-200's

SAA only has one A330-200 at the moment (G-WWBD). The other aircraft, G-WWBB has been returned to bmi to allow the latter to re-introduce services to Washington.

G-WWBB took up the reins of doing the ORD service from MAN (it arrived here yesterday), with G-WWBM re-inauguarating IAD today.
