Hubs On The Rise

I know that there is a current topic about which hubs might close so I thought I would get a feel as to which ones will prosper.

Well, the Atlanta hub is always a winner... still easily the busiest in the world, with no contender even coming close.

LHR will always have demand, though NIMBYs and politics temper it somewhat

ORD is in danger of losing either of its two major tenants in the not-too-distant future.... but the demand will always be there for the taking.

I'd say Atlanta. Delta is huge there and Air Tran looks as if it has no signs of slowing down.

DFW is a big winner...and even if AA were to go under, DL or someone would definately fill in the void..the Metroplex is too valuable an area to let go un-hubbed

Definitely Atlanta, DL's hub there is magnificent with over 900 daily flights(600 mainline) and they're not going anywhere and are expanding. FL's hub has nearly 200 daily flights and is expanding as well. ATL is going to be on the rise for a long time to come.

Northwest at DTW.

After building that 1.2 billion dollar terminal last year, no way is Northwest pulling out of DTW. If Northwest were to go under which they probably wont anytime soon, someone else would jump at an opportunity for that terminal.

I don’t agree with that. MEM and MSP are near pre-9/11 flight levels whereas DTW is down significantly - in fact, MSP is now NW’s largest hub. The only way in which DTW would be “on the rise” is if a new management team (instead of the current one – most of its members were born and raised within Minnesota and show a preference toward MSP; e.g. they opted to keep the late bank of flight departures at MSP even after the new DTW terminal opened because they insisted people preferred to connect there, despite opposing research) took over NW or – better yet – another airline took control of the hub. AA has expressed interest in DTW for many, many years (DTW is among the top airports in the country in terms of hub premiums – ranked #2 behind PIT a few years ago, AA would have a near-monopoly instead of shadowing UA – fares at ORD are significantly lower, especially from competition from TZ and WN at MDW) as has DL.

How about Seattle with Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.

Alaska Airlines has always dominated Seattle with west coast routes but the expansion to BostonNewarkWashingtonMiamiOrlandoDenver from Seattle and increasing flights to destinations down the west coast have made Seattle a bigger hub.

Horizon Air is also expanding to cities like Santa Barbra from Seattle.

Seattle may not be a huge airline for Seattle like Delta is for Atlanta or Northwest Airlines at DTW but for us Seattle people Alaska Airlines is huge and they are expanding every year.

PHL and CLT will benefit at the expense of US downgrading at PIT. When's the last time they announced a new destination out of there? Every month or so there is a new Carribean destination anounced or PHL and/or CLT.

American Airlines' Miami hub is one of the only, if not the only, major US hub which has had an increase in mainline flights since 9.11, and has yet to feel any of the RJ affect (and while RJs will be used to launch new routes in 2004, they will not be placed on current ones).

I can not see NWA departing from DTW! Of all the hubs it has the most International and European flights. Also it is brand new so no more of the dreaded long walks and funky and different gate areas like before. I believe in time this once again will be the biggest hub for NWA. I believe the A330's will all be based here at first.

CO just completed a huge expansion at Terminal C, adding 17 gates capable of handling International arrivals.

Gordon Bethune was quoted (before 9-11) that when the expansion was done CO was going to grow to 25 Trans-Atlantic destinations from EWR, as well as more Asian flights.

CO is also nearing completion (this year) of their new 20 gate Terminal E at IAH, all capable of handling International Arrivals.

Of the major US airlines, I think it is fairly safe to assume the following will remain as major hubs:

Chicago O'Hare (AA and UA), but nowhere near the pre-9/11 levels of traffic. ORD is still a very functional airport, with 7 runways and is the third largest US city. Even if AA files for Chapter 11 and UA is liquidated, the ORD slots and assets are the crown jewels in both carriers.

Atlanta Hartsfield (ATL)
Highly efficient, well developed hub for both DL and AirTran. Crowded as it is, it works well. ATL is within 2 hours of flying from 80% of the US population, according to the Atlanta chamber of commerce.

Houston Intercontinental (IAH) and Newark Liberty (EWR)
Continental and the Houston Airport System as well as the Port Authority of NY and NJ have spent millions redeveloping these two airports well. Newark is the busiest airport in the NY area. IAH is a solid connecting point with great access to Central and South America.

Detroit (DTW)
First class facility has replaced a disgusting trash of an airport. Northwest has a solid route system from DTW.

Philadelphia (PHL)
Good alternative to EWR, NYC area, and DC area airports. City and US Airways are spending $$ to upgrade it. US has limited competition from here. Fifth largest US metropolitan area.

Miami (AA)
Still the largest gateway to Latin America and one of the fastest growing air markets in the world. With SARS hitting Asia hard, Latin America could surpass Asia in traffic.

Charlotte-Douglas International (CLT)
Good alternative to ATL. Provided US Airways stays afloat, CLT will thrive.

San Francisco is threatened by United Airlines' financial condition, SARS, which is hitting Trans Pacific traffic very hard, and competition from Oakland by low cost carriers. Inefficient airport, prone to delays, expensive fees.

Pittsburgh is history. Not a natural hub. Small sized city, with limited O&D. Same goes for CLE and MEM.

Only United can keep DEN a hub. Too expensive to operate from otherwise. Frontier does not have critical mass.

LAX isn't suited for a hub. Outdated, lousy terminals, no room for expansion, and not a geographic connecting point, but a good transit through from Asia/South Pacific/Hawaii.

CVG is a good maybe. SLC not sure.

DFW too big to fail.

I didn't say that. I said that as long as NW had exclusive rights (per contract) to be the sole hub carrier at DTW, the airport would never reach its full potential. Many premium consumers (mostly within the automotive indsutry) have been chased away by horrible schedules and lousy service... at one point, NW wanted to offer just two A319 DTW-SFO flights.

I believe in time this once again will be the biggest hub for NWA.
NW didn't have any hubs until they acquired RC (although they did have a sizeable operation at both MSP and DTW). DTW was NW's largest hub from the time NW acquired RC until last December -- almost a year after the new terminal opened. Will it become their largest hub again? Possibly - maybe probably. But NW's doing nothing to help... DTW-MCO and DTW-LAS have always been solid markets (for any airline). So what did NW do? Pull the scheduled B753 (before they operated) and put them on MSP-MCO and MSP-LAS... all of a sudden, MSP became a valid connection city for places like FNT-MCO (FNT-MSP-MCO is about the same distance as FNT-MSP-LAS). I was scheduled on a mid-afternoon LAS-MSP flight in December (it was suppose to be LAS-DTW) and about half the passengers were connecting to DTW! Only about a dozen were getting off at MSP. NW's management team is from MN... they seem to favor MSP.

I believe the A330's will all be based here at first.
Yes they will be -- in fact, the DC-10 should be retired from DTW within 10 months. But IAD is UA's main transatlantic hub... and also their smallest overall.

LAX's infrastructure might be outdated... but let's not forget that it's also the largest single O&D airfield in the USA; that alone guarantees it an ever-lasting shower of competitive airline service.
