Phoenix-bound plane evacuated after reports of explosive device
Jun. 2, 2003 04:45 PM
MEDFORD, Ore. - A small commuter airplane en route to Phoenix had to return to the airport here and was evacuated Monday after reports there may have been an explosive device on board, said Mike Fergus, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.
The plane, an Air Shuttle flight owned by America West, was headed from Medford to Phoenix when it returned to the Rogue Valley International Airport around 3 p.m., Fergus said.
Someone called the America West headquarters and said there was an explosive device on the plane, said Nico Melendez, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration's West Coast region.
Melendez would not say whether the call came from someone on board the plane or not.
Officials felt the call was a "credible threat" because the caller referred to a specific flight, said Kim Stearns, airport spokeswoman.
"The individual was firm and gave information for a specific flight," she said.
All 30 passengers and their luggage were removed from the plane, Melendez said, and no injuries were reported. All bags were being rechecked for any trace of an explosive device, he said.
An Oregon State Police bomb squad was en route to the airport to search the plane, said Lt. Mike Moran with the Medford Police.

According to the America West schedule, Mesa, dba America West Express, is the one operating the flights between Medford and Phoenix for America West. The flight would have been 6361 since it has a 2:45 pm departure time. Checking the flight status on America West's homepage shows this flight gives an error box and using a flight tracker shows that this flight was diverted.

And now the rest of the story....
The threat was called in by a passenger who was late for the flight. The ticket agents became suspicious when a man came into the terminal asking about the flight which was already called back to Medford. He has been arrested and is in jail. THis guy needs to pay big-time!!!!
