Yesterday I was to lucky to join a private tour through the new Dock E (Midfield, will be opened Sept 1st) at ZRH Airport. It is really one of the most beautiful airport buildings. But the best news for airport visitors are, that a part of the visitors deck will be "landside", for that it will be possible for all airport visitors to go out there (via visitors deck B and the then by bus). From this new visitors deck you have a breath-taking view over almost the whole runway system. You see the whole length of the r/w 16-34 an 10-28. Two of the 27 gates are prepared for the A 380 (but unfortunately I doubt that we will see one in ZRH soon). Most gates have two airbridges that allows to board/deboard the aircrafts from the front and rear (I am not sure if the second airbridge really goes to the back of the aircraft, but I was told so).
So for all aviation enthusiasts, go out there when you are in Zurich (from Sept 1st 2003 on) it is probably one of the most spectacular visitors deck of any airport.

Kind Regards Philipp

Philipp, the 2nd airbridge is to serve the 2nd aircraft door in front of the wing, subject to availability of such a door! B747's, MD-11's or A330's/A340's will use these two airbridges while B737's or A320's only have one entrance door in front of the wings.

AMS for example has (unique) airbridges reaching over the wing to serve the rear doors.

Thanks "Unique" for this information. That is what i thought when I looked at the airbridge. I asked our guide a second time when he told that the other airbridge could serve a back door. I didn't believe because I know how this airbridges in AMS look like. They have to go over the wing.

I will be in Zurich lots of times during the summer season - school here is goin' to start around Sep 7th - so a Midfield Terminal visit must be okay. Can't wait for it.

A question - is the visitor deck around the whole terminal (at all 4 sides ) or only over parts of the building?
Also, how were you able to join this tour?

regards, Florian

Florian, the public deck is on the western part (and a little to the north and south) only hence morning visits are recommended!

Florian. The visitors deck is around the whole dock but it is divided in two parts. The western part (towards r/w 16-34) is landside for the airport visitors ant the eastern part is airside for the checked passengers. Therefore you won't be able to go around the entire dock.

Errr, how are they going to make that work - dock midfield has no landside access and I guess they will not shuttle passengers from the old observation deck to dock midfield every few minutes or so. Will it be some kind of scheduled service, e.g. on an hourly basis, or will you have to book one of the expensive sightseeing tours and are allowed to get on/off at dock midfield ?

Vfw614, there will indeed be a shuttle service from the known observation deck! I'm not too sure but every 30 mins. or so...

This way, security check can be done at one spot, safe manpower and costs!

Enjoy...

Will this viewing area be open to transferring pax without having to clear customs?

Blink: Yes I think the eastern part of the deck will open to the transferring passengers. You won't have to clear customs because there are no customs out there. Actually the whole Dock E is "airside". Only the western part of the visitors deck is accessible from the landside.

Yeah, the deck is really great. I was up there for a few minutes earlier this year during the WEF, and I'm really looking forward to its opening...

Thanks for the answer - but still - is it possible to book such a tour through dock F until September?

Florian, officially there are no tours before the opening. I'm afraid you have to wait for another 12 weeks...

Oh, that would be no good! I maybe will come to Zurich next weekend...

ZRH: Why were you having the pleasure to take part of a tour?

Spotterboy: I could join a tour because a friend of mine knows one the chief-engineers of the 5th expanding of ZRH airport. I was very lucky to go there. The tour should have lasted 2 hours but we stayed there from 18.15 till 21.00. As "Unique" said there are unfortunately no official tours. I am afraid that you have to wait till Sept 1st. :-(
