That is a good image, one of the most interesting I've seen on this site.......but are you sure about the scale? according to the Airbus website the dimensions of the A380 are 73m overall lenght and wing span of 79.8m

380 looks like a 773 with double decks and 4 engines! Or a 346 with double decks if you like! A really huge bird that requires absolutely monstrous power to be taking off from the ground!!

The scale (and perspective) are slightly wrong.

To be shown at the same scale as the 744(?) to the left, the A380 should be 18 pixels less nose-to-tail, and 41 pixels less wingspan.

That 261 ft span is going to be something, I would imagine that it cant fit into most of the existing gates now without putruding into other gates. Its really amazing I compare my 1/400 scale A380 to the 747 and others and it dwarfs them

That is a good image, one of the most interesting I've seen on this site.......but are you sure about the scale?

I'm wondering that, myself. The A380 looks monstrous by comparison, but it's only 8 feet or so longer than the 744 (239' 3'' vs 231' 10''), although the wingspan is 50 feet wider from tip to tip (261' 10'' vs 211' 5'').

Also, it looks MUCH thicker in the photo, but the A380 has a maximum cabin width of only 21' 7'' (just 19' 5'' on the upper deck), compared to 20 feet on the 744.

Judging by these photos, it appears it is NOT truly to scale.

Your comparison is based on looking at 1:400 models. My comparison was based on pixel-to-pixel measurements, manufacturer's specified dimensions, and a few seconds with a calculator.

Now, it's quite possible that I made a typo somewhere, but I suggest you think carefully before answering.

I don't know how you worked out your maths but I think it's difficult to tell with this picture, scale and perspective would be much easier to judge if it had been taken from directly above. It does look a little big to me but probably not too far off. The fuselage, though only a little 'wider' than the 747 at its widest point, should indeed look much larger than that because it has a high width on all three of it's decks; i.e. the top floor is much bigger than the 747's, which will make the whole ting look a lot bigger, I think.



Next flight.... who knows.

Yes, a picture taken from directly above (or at least, from a greater distance)would allow fairer visual comparison - if the right size of A380 was photoshopped onto it.

Jean you are absolutely correct and Bobrayner sorry about your bad day and yes I thought before I spoke. The guy that produce 1/400 Scale Gemini and Dragon Wings get them down to scale with 99% percent accuracy to scale. So a 1/400 scale A380 compared to a 1/400 Scale 1/400 747 would give you a great perspective of a size difference to look for in the real aircraft. Thanks and I hope your day gets better!

Wow! If that is drawn perfectly to scale, then the A380 is going to be huge! I wonder how much bigger the -900 variant of the A380 will be. I remember driving on the one bridge to YYZ, which is just under the glide path of one of the runways. A LH 744 looked so enormous, it was hard to believe that it was actually flying. Can't wait to see one of these in the same spot, sometime soon!

Remember the 380 has 50 more foot of span than the 744 so that is what it would probably be like in exisiting gates Ual767ord.

Looks realistic to me. The A380 is marginally wider and taller than the 744, the wings look much bigger and thicker though.

I must be the only one here who is disappointed in the size of this new jumbo. It looks about the same general size as the 747 except a little more robust. And according to the dimensions already known, that's all it is. It still fits in the old fashioned 80 x 80 box.

I don't think that would happen. I think the winglet of the LH B744 would go right under the A380's wing, while on push back, if the photo had the correct scale.

OK, I did a bit more maths just so we have something solid to argue over rather than "it looks too big" / "no it doesn't"...  Big grin

Measured distances on the image (had to discard a lot due to cropping & low contrast); then compared these against the actual dimensions of the airplane (had to discard a few more, I didn't know lengths of wing + horiz stab leading + trailing edges). Some variance in the scales is ensured by perspective, low resolution, and probably my own mistakes.

Pixels per metre for the 744:
3.89 Between wingtips
3.90 Shadow of wingspan
3.87 Nose - tail
3.60 Nose - tip of vertical stabiliser (as the crow flies)
3.70 Between inner engines (centre axis)
3.80 Between outer engines (centre axis)

Pixels per metre for the 388:
4.39 Between wingtips
4.09 Nose - tail
3.75 Nose - tip of vertical stabiliser (as the crow flies)
3.89 Between inner engines (centre axis)
4.10 Between outer engines (centre axis)
4.12 Horizontal length of wing / wingbox join

So the 388 is definitely shown with more pixels per metre than the 744. In other words, it's unrealistically large.

Its about as much to scale as it can be, you guys are forgetting that the originally image is taken with a wide angle camera (hence why the AC 747 looks small), and the A380 is the closest a/c to the camera.

The caculations mean nothing at all, because of the focal length, perspective and camera angle...

Simple way to compensate:

Move your face very close to the screen, and to the left, when looking at the image above. Perspective will then increase the apparent size of the 747. If you get your head in just the right place, the 2 planes will be shown at the same scale.
